Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Does anyone use these & would they recommend them. I know the probes have to be replaced but how often.

I was looking at one of the pen type meters.

hi mickey how do you calibrate them properly. you mentioned calibrating water? I use the test kits but when the kids decide to help out you end up missing the time and then you have to start over so this could be handy as you say if there are a few tanks involved.

I have one and use it the odd time
It seems to work, I have used it on a tank when I installed pressurized co2
I put in too much co2 and the pen dropped about 1.0 ph a big change,
When you make no big changes the pen dose not seem to change much

I think these meters do work but you need to know when to use them

But im still fairly new to them

i use this one and find it great: www.monitors-direct.co.uk/ProductDetails...3&ProductID=1042
its fairly cheapish and does what it says on the tin! my brother has the same one but i dont think his works too well. i know one other person who swears by them.
nessa you have to buy calibration fluid to calibrate them every few months or so.

As mentioned they are verry hand for multiple tanks. It is best to calibrate them every 2-3 weeks since it only takes a Minuit. One thing that is some times overlooked is they are set to read at a certain temperature. Usually 25c for tropical and marines. If the water or calibration fluid is say ph6.8 and tested at 25c you will get the correct reading of ph6.8. But if the temp. is say 10c you will get a reading of ph6.9
Also some meters are effected by ballasts (lighting unit) so test should be done away from the tank. But i think this only applies to the larger plug in meters.

Calibration fluid is cheap as chips if you buy it in a hydroponic (head) shop. I paid €3 a year ago for 250ml which will last a life time.

yes that's the name of the stuff i was thing of i just put it away to safe and could not find it, chemist got it for me:laugh:

it is very handy when you are caught in the twilight zone higher/lower drops one tool does the job!

with my one so long as you keep some water in the lid the life is extended i use the calibrating fluid and change it after a few uses because naturally enough it gets contaminated by tank water.

were it really is out standing is been able to monitor the pH changes when you add new equipment etc

As we all know we can not always believe the label when it says it wont affect pH. a point in question was a friend set up a cichlids tank i suggested he remove his new bogwood to a bucket for a few we test the tank twice at 24hour interval there was a difference that his liquid test did not show.

I have a few of those thing they give you in hosiptal for samples it takes maybe four minutes to fill the nine samples may be at most ten to test them all.

Using the drops i would be lucky to have two done maybe three!
so i think i save on time and mess and the water goes back in to the tank not down the sink.
and less chemicals to worry about
