Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

FRY IN FILTER

Ive a vitatech filter (which is actually made by Enheim but they've put Vitatech name on it).Basically its an internal filter and consists of a sponge internally. HOWEVER......I have alot of molly fry at present in the tank and Im still waiting to set up my other tank for these fish. The fry are being sucked into the filter every day. They dont get harmed and live inside the filter container then. So I have to empty the filter every day to put the fry back into the tank. My question is if I place a pair of tights over the filter intake at the bottom I presume the filter will be alright ? It wont overheat will it ?

Hi Gavin,
I have no practical experience with this pump i only use Hagen equipment were possible.

But in general most pumps have flow adjustments so you should not have problem there i would worry about the inlet getting clogged. could a sponge be used? it would not get clogged as quick and remove the chance of the filter burning out. In fact might become an alternative food source for the fry.

I thought the back of the filter was the way the fry were getting pulled (even though I never see how they get in) and I put a pair of tights over that part last night (the missus didnt mind haha!),and found that the fry went straight for it and were feeding off it!! I'll try placing it over the whole filter inlet tonight and see how I get on. The tights are actually black and are perfect for concealing the filter also,so even when I move the fry Im gonna keep the tights in place and it would look fine. Brings a whole new meaning to the phrase FISHNET tights! HAHA!

I have found a fully grown amano shrimp in one of these filters before. How he got in i dont know.
Using the tights will be fine as long as you keep them from getting to dirty. If they get to dirty they will clog reducing the flow into the filter. When this happens there will be a strain on the motor. So just keep your tights clean.

Once the filter flow stays good you should not have any problems with the pump buring out, as platy says keep you tights clean.

Filters are great places for finding fry. I have found Gossei cory fry in an Ehiem Ecco. Also in an Ecco I recently found baby crystal red shrimplets and only tonight I found a 1 inch Apisto cacatoides female in the sump of the tank the parents are in - fat and healthly lookign too :-)
