Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi all,

Has anyone any experience of these www.lidl.ie/IE/home.nsf/pages/c.o.20091123.p.Drill_Pump and if so how on earth could they be of use in an aquarium?

That was my initial reaction also but I'm not so sure it would actually work. I was thinking that hooking up a gravel cleaner to this contraption would be dangerous as you might end up sucking out gravel and perhaps the odd fish who got too close.

Does anyone use anything like this?

I use eheim univeral rotary pump for draining and refilling water along with pyhton clean and fill.

www.zooplus.ie/shop/fish/filters_pumps/a...mps/air_pumps/126280

I connect gravel cleaner to water intake of the pump and pyhton to fountain output(where it get sucked to the drainer).

the thing is pump is not extremely powerful so it doesnot suck all the gravel(sometimes even dirt falls back).

guess depends how powerfull the lidl pump is.

more so how powerful the drill is, most drills now have a power adjuster, so you can set it to whatever speed you need it. so if it was starting to suck up the gravel simly turn the power on the drill down!! if its letting dirt fall into the tank turn it up a little. it is a good idea and for €7 it'd be worth it!

I just know this will end in tears but what the hell I'll give it a go for €7.

One question though. How can you operate the trigger on the drill (to operate the pump) and use the gravel filter at the same time? Somehow use an elastic band to keep the trigger pulled???? Sounds messy and has the potential for a big accident.

Has anyone tried using these in the end?

I'm only really interested in using it to pump water "in" to tanks - so if there's any lubricant on the propeller etc. I'd be interested to hear if anyone has tried & if it had any adverse effect on their fishies?

I don't have one but I'm damn sorry I didn't take the chance to buy one the other day when I saw them! I had to empty a tank and sump yesterday and once I got beyond a point I had to use a mug to bail out the water... it was very tedious!

I'm sure that it is safe for pumping water into tank but I prob would flush it for a while before using it just to be safe!
