Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

using a generator

I just taught i would post this in case anyone has to use a generator at some point but is not sure what wattage they might need or how long the fuel might last.

Recently the ESB were doing maintenance in my area leaving me with out power for 8 hours.
So it was time to put my back up plan in to action using a generator to keep things ticking over while the power was off.
Unfortunately the generator i had which was brand new was not working correctly so i had to borrow one from a fellow fishkeeper.
It was a 4 stroke 2300watt generator.
I set it up at the end of the garden and ran a long lead into the house. From there i had to run 8 extension leads to various points to power the tanks.
The list of equipment it powered.
3 large external filters.
3 medium eternals.
1 small external.
2 juwel internal filters.
1 large highblow air pump.
1 large tetratec airpump.
1 small airpump.
14 heaters ranging from 50w 200w.
11 T5 & T8 light units (day time).
1 marine tank with 2 internal pumps,1 pump for sump,1 heater, T5 lighting, T5 pc on refugium.
1 oil radiator.
I'm sure there were also a couple of things i haven't listed.

The generator ran for 9 hours and used about 5Litres of petrol.

I hope you never need to use a generator but if you do i hope this info helps.

Yes i was pretty shocked myself. I had been in work and on the phone all day checking it was still running.
I had someone on standby to refuel it but there was no need.

I also had a small fridge freezer (for fish food) and a heat mat+lamp (for a snake) running off it as well.

Thanks for the loan. You are a life saver. Well not mine but a lot of fish.
I will have mine fixed as quick as i can.

Cheers Lar. Yeah, its quite a bit smaller than Darrens but personally I wouldnt need a monster like his. Not bad at all for 70 yoyos, may invest in one of these...

Don't forget you can also hire one without the expense of buying!

True, but not much use if you have an unplanned outage.

Yes, but ideal if the outage is planned or if the power goes during business hours when you can get down to a hire shop!?
The E70 Aldi jobbies are grand for arsing about but I doubt they would power even a quarter of what Darren has listed above.

Gees Lads! Just sayin! My family business was machinery hire and sales. Hiring of generators was pretty consistant and people didn't come running when there were power cuts (which was pretty often where I am from), however it would be pretty handy to own/rent a generator if you thought you were going to lose all your livestock. That's all! ;)

Two great alternative suggestions there - how about the bike generator pedalled by electric eels?
