Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi folks.
Just looking for some of your opinions. My big tank is set up to be low maintenance as I am away from home a lot... lots of easy plants going wild, easy fish etc.

I've always loved Back to Nature backgrounds and I'm finally in the position where I can buy one. I've seen a good few set up in the last few months and they are spectacular, especially when matured.

The one for my is the Woodrock www.backtonature.se/english/woodrock_120x60_800.html

The questions: Am I mad to rip apart my Vision 260 to fit one? Are they worth the hassle? Does anyone here have one? I'd have nowhere to keep my fish or plants while I was doing the work so I'd have to start from scratch.

Here is a pic of the tank this very evening...

Fussy backgrounds detract from what you want to be seen in your Tank, let the plants at the back be your background and focus on what's IN, and not ON your tank. Won't you also lose a bit of volume and isn't it a refuge for gunk and pest hideaways, they do look great but why bother?

unless you cut it in two you wont fit it in the Vision 260. The bar across looks like a real pain to get off as it is molded into the section that the lids sits on.
Also you will have it probably take out your juwel internal

Hmmm, thats a tough one. I guess it depends on how much you want it. Is it niggling at you and is the cash burning a hole in your pocket? They do look well but I have seen some beautiful 3d backgrounds that were DIY jobs. Bit of styrofoam and paint with a dash of creativity and bobs your uncle. Nice setup btw.

Would a moss wall not look better on the back of that tank?

I see where you're coming from Kev although you are really supposed to put a flow through the back chambers even with filter media. I won't lose volume as the water is still there but I will lose space for fish... which isn't a problem as I keep stock levels low.

@Damian IRL the background I have my eye on comes in 4 bits, I wouldn't go near the one piece ones unless I was having a tank built around it. The first thing I do is reef out the Juwel filter every time anyway so that is long gone! :cheer:

viperbot... I wish I had the time, patience and space to do a DIY one! I also want to make it possible to remove again... not so easy to do if its made out of expanding foam (or the like) in-tank.

Thanks for your thoughts! Keep em coming!

Not yet!
Am starting a campaign for weeping moss, now that I finally got Christmas moss.
Care to join me in requesting it??????
It was on Gavins list, which I presume is pie in the sky now.
However, I'm sure there are other sponsors who have access to the same supplier......

P.s. Aponogeton natans is GOREGOUS in streams/open tanks/barrels.........(hint hint!)

Got some of a similar back round in my 450 3" thick, still have the internal filter, a bit of creativity will easily hide the internal.

Takes up a fair amount of space, WHL 3"x2'x5'

The foam has now become layered with a crust adding the finishing touch to the natural look. These backrounds look so much better when they've got some growth on them.

I have the Slimeline 3D Back to Nature background in a 350l African Cichlid Setup which was installed 5 weeks ago, (cost @80yoyos from a Sponsor).

It already has matured really well to look less artificial and blends in better now with my rocks.
I removed my internal filter and replaced it with 2 Tetratec EX1200, glad I did.

However, I have an 84l tank which I am planning on planting with a moss wall,
as I think it looks really well.

This pic is before it started to mature and darken.
