Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I was just wondering where you buy your aquarium literature, is there a store here in Ireland that has a large stock or do you buy your books over the internet?

Thanks

most of the stores sell books, some are very basic though and can be a bit of a waste, some are very advanced and can be very expensive, amazon is always good..the burgess "fishlopedia" is well worth a buy, it is written in conjunction with mary bailey (ex pfk )if you fancy a treat you could buy all the baench atlas books. prolly the best fish id around although written a while ago so some ideas in tech and husbandry have moved on.The interpet fish health encyclopedia is very good. Any of the aqualog books totally cut the mustard be can be quite specialised (if you like one kind of fish and want to know everything about them then they are the job.(expensive) also the fish soc has a library (you could join and borrow books hehe) not sure what titles they have but I'm guessing they might have some of the above. If you are at a basic stage and want a good book that has lots of easily explained info I like the "500 ways to be a better freshwater/marine fish keeper" series. Hope this helps.

Gavin.

dont make me come over there.

That’s allot of advice there, thanks Gavin!

I have read none of the ones you mentioned and will surely look them up.
I was very happy with Ingo Seidel’s L-Catfishes and would not mind continuing with the Back to Nature series.

I have shopped on the internet before for aquarium literature and have mostly found what I was looking for. I guess I was dreaming of a place that had the literature in shop for a flick. But it’s probably for the better if there is none. I’m already spending too much on this hobby as is.

Hey there,

Amazon is the place to go mate. For example, I picked up The Conscientious Marine Aquarist 2nd Edition brand new for 33 Euros. Its around 90 Euros in most shops. Nuff said...

That is a very good point Viperbot, internet seems to win the votes then.

When the price differ that much it’s an easy choice, if a LFS was 5-10 Euro dearer on the other hand I would prefer the LFS and get the book straight away.
