Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Do airpumps lose their power? was created by georgina (georgina)
Hi all,
Just a quick questions, my airpump seems to have gotten really "slow" lately giving out very few bubbles compared to what it used to be. Do they just get tired???

Hi Gerogina,

Let me know the make and model and I'll let you know what I think ;)

Could be that you need a new diaphragm or could be that it is clog - where is it located, how old it is etc etc :?: :?:

Best Regards................Tony

Ok i finally checked it out, its a Rena 50, I've never changed the diaghram. Since I posted last the amount of bubbles has decreased to a mere dribble....

First check the air filter that is useully on the base. It is a little cotten disk that can go hard from dirt been sucked in.
Remove this and see if the pump works better. If this is the case just replace it with cotton wool.
If this dosent work then it is more than lightly the diafram.
To change the diafram can be a bit fiddley on some makes, just remamber were all the parts go and you should have no problems.

Rena diaphragms (especially in the newer models) are moulded with a magnet and this cause the polars to vibrate which pumps the air. I gave up on that make after the same sort of problems, changed diaphragms and that did not help. Also they were too noisey IMO.

Ok so i took the thing apart and tried fiddling with it, the diaphram seems to be ok in it, assuming thats the black rubber part. Maybe I should just get a new one? Anyone any suggestions on a good model, or anyone got a second hand one I could buy from them?

Hay Georgina,
Any time i have replaced old (black rubber) diaframs in air pumps the old ones looked fine. But they worked a lot better and quieter after replacing the old for new.

Georgina - I might be selling my Hailea in a few months if you are interested. At that time I will need to invest in a bigger one. The one I have produces lots of air. I have mine running 3 large filters and 2 brine shrimp bottles.

Let me know and I'll keep you in mind
