Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Here's a tough one for all of you folks out there

If that isn't what you bought them as Martin then I'm in trouble too...

Still hoping that Rob will be able to get me some more, he has promised to try.

How about behavioural attention, that can often give a clue.
The males I've seen pictures of definitely have longer dorsal fin extensions though.

it's very hard to make a definitive comment, but if one was going to be a male it would be the second one.

How do they react to one another? I would bet the first one is a female though.

Here's a picture of a nice male from goofleimages.

I shouldn't really be publishing this without permission, but I'll delete it later.

strange you say that john cos the second photo is of the considerably smaller one of the two i have . they seem pretty indifferent to eachother if i'm honest, but every now and again they do seem to swim around together . never any agression between them

That might account for its lack of fin extensions yet, if it is considerably smaller it might need to grow more first. The one I put in the picture of is a mature adult male.

I think there's enough evidence to suggest they actually are the Krobia sp Xingu, but mine are as red as your's so the 'red spotted' might be a misnomer.
It will be interesting to see when they are fully grown if the colouration changes, but I think the picture I posted has been 'got at' as far as that goes anyway - but that was the best one I found to show the male finnage.

Well John i thought the same until recently when i was doing a small bit of research and came across this page

www.cichlidae.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=8649

This is where the species differences start to wreck my head cos judging by the photos on this page , I think i have a totally different sub species

and here's another link i came across which ( judging by the description of markings ) would indicate that the species we have is in fact a mouthbrooder ........ again a total shock to me !!

Fair enough - I can see the likeness there so had better say no more (in hold - stop digging scenario).
What sizes are your two?

the bigger of the two would be pushing on 3.5 inches and the smaller one about 3

dont know much about this species or even the genus other than it used to be aequidens. but the pictures show a big or fatty throat/chest area which is usually seen on more mature fish or the large centrals such as in aquamojos photos.
general head shape dos'nt look as i'd expect for a young fish.
aquamojo might have some insight on this species as they are popular in america.
