Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

hi all

it's been a while since I put up a few Pix, so here's a few of My Pride n' Joy this last while...
Rio 240 with cardinals, hyphessobrycon callistus, danio kyathit, columbian red fin tetra, ottocinclus, sumatran gobys, a few rainbow fish etc. etc.
anubias coffeefolia, anubias argentafolia, crinum calamistra, crinum natans, a few different types of aponogeton, a few different types of cryptocoryne etc. etc.

loving this Tank, it's a big change to the monsters that used to be in it, the only thing is that, I'm starting to get a bit of some sort of hair algae growing on some of the leaves and it is doing My head in

I'm going to have to sort it out before it gets out of control...

cheers

Easycarbo does wonders with those hairy algae
Dosage to be done daily though
Probably around 1.5ml per 50l

Easy Carbo IS great but get a syringe, turn off any filters to allow water to remain still and dose directly onto the algae.. this is the quickest method.

One Question... In the first few pix, how the heck did you get all the Fish to point in the one direction? lol.

Lovely set-up

Kev.

cheers Lads

haven't been able to reply untill now, My UPC connection has been down for the last couple of days... :(
dropped up to Mothers Gaff for a while, said I'd check the Net while I was there...
cheers for the advice Bart n' Kev, I'll try that out...
I was just browsing down through the Pix, it's mad, You wouldn't think there was nearly 50 Cardinals in there...
the Pix don't do the Tank justice, I must sort out a new Video Camera, Mine got smashed at a Gig...
there's HD Video Camera available in Lidel at the moment, might pick it up, decent stats n' price...

p.s.
if anybody has a half decent HD Video Camera for sale, send Me a PM...

Hi Des,
Tank is looking really good. Fair play to you! Looking forward to seeing more pics as plants develop and tank matures. I had fierce probs with black beard algae (the red stringy stuff) and I started using Easy Carbo and feeding the plants with Ferropol and Ferropol 24. I also got 2 siamese algae eaters. Those guys do a phenomenol job! The algae didn't stand a chance! The algae has completely disappeared. I can't honestly say which change made the biggest contribution to removing the algae but all 3 combined, ie carbo, feeding and SAE's did the trick!

P.S If you are getting SAE's make sure you get the "true" ones as there are "false" ones. The "true" SAE has a black line along its side that continues right through to the tip of the tail. I'm no expert but I think that's the main difference!

Well done again,
Paul

Hi Des. Nice setup and your fish look great. If I may make a suggestion, I think your setup would benefit greatly with a background in place to hide the hosing from the canister etc. Just my 2c ;) .

I'll give it to Ya Jay, a (black) background would be great on that Tank but it would be a pain to add it at this stage, it is something I have often thaught about but the hassle of emptying a load of water and walking the Tank out a bit to add a background is something I keep delaying even with the obvious benefits of a black background to compliment the lush greenery and stunning colours of the Cardinals...
maybe it's time to add one...
sometimes I think I like to see the pipes to know that all is well but Cardinals against a Black Background would be something...

cheers for the Info. Luap, an interesting post, I must invest in a couple of SAE's, I have a big bottle of Easy Carbo and ProFito (or whatever it's called) but I hardly ever remember to add it
suppose I should start...

I'll defonitely be getting a couple SAE's, I always thaught they where nippy, no, or is that just the fake ones ?

actually come think of it a lot of People with a few Discus and a big shoal of Cardinals or Rummeys seem to keep a couple of SAE's in their Tanks, so They mustn't be too bad...

Cheers
Des

Def go with a black background Des. It will add depth to the display and contrast nicely with your plants and fish. It might be a hassel doing it but trust me, you will be glad you did. Believe me, if something goes wrong with the pipes, you will know about it pretty quickly ;) .

Des, those SAE do wonders for black beard algae in a tank. They like to be kept in small groups and only ever chase each other, but more like shoaling than actually damaging each other. When young they will eat algae off leaves all day long. The ones I have are now fat and lethargic, which says a lot about the algae problems I had! As Luap said, make sure you get the true SAE. Similar species could lead to all sorts of problems so I'm told.

This helped me- www.fishlore.com/aquariummagazine/may08/...e-algae-eater-id.htm

Des,
I've had zero probs with the SAE's in my community tank. They don't bother the other occupants at all! If anything, they seem to get chased around a bit by the one zebra danio I have left! I got the last 2 SAE's in stock in Seahorse Aquariums a few weeks ago . I was in there last week and I think I noticed them back in stock.
