Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

That looks great, but a little tenuous - please tell us the rocks aren't just balancing on top of one another?

It looks great but I gotta agree with John, that stonework looks a little unstable mate. You have large rock stacked on smaller pieces which is asking for trouble. A fish may not knock it over but doing a water change or other maintanence you might do it and crack the glass. I know its a pain but it is well worth rearranging it a bit, just to be on the safe side. I assume from the rockwork that this is going to be an african setup? What stock do you have in mind?

they are stacked, but rocks looks smaler when you looking from the front, they are wide rocks and I stacked them very well. Its looks unstable allright but if you look from the side they ok. didnt want to silicone them couse I think I will change them around after a while. so if u guys think its realy bad way to stack rocks like this Ill change them. Viperbot It will be Tanganyika setup, looking for some nice species

As long as you are happy that they are secure then that's fine - however, the large rock on the left (above the anubias) does seem to only be resting on the point of the rock below - even though the other end of it does seem more secure.

I'd say that was some investment on the rocks alone?

Looks very nice, but having never kept an African tank before I can't advise on how to put together your set-up. Would have to agree with the lads that it sure does look a bit rocky-sorry unstable.

Best of luck with it.

Tube of silicone is a lot cheaper than a new tank, not to mention water damage and mess on floor. Better to be safe than sorry :)

hi dejwys. i would advise redoing the aquascape and using less rock. sometimes the best aquascape for a range of species is 2 or 3 seperate structures that will create different territories. it might be also better not to use the smaller pieces and carefully terrace the larger bits so there is no danger of collapse. it is almost impossible to build tall terracing safely using unevenly shaped rock without spot siliconing the pieces together.
the petstop shops at airside and carrickmines, have really nice terracing in the african display tanks and it might be worthwhile having a look at these sometime.
anyway good luck with the set up and i hope it works out well.

30 tanks specialise in african cichlids, angelfish and various catfish

Thanks for the very kind offer, but I'm a bit far away so I'll decline.
I did take a look up on the Slieve Bloom mountains but that isn't such nice rock there.
I seem to remember Fr Sean telling us of a place to collect sandstone - I'll have to go searching back to find the post.

@Christyg- silicon is definitely cheaper than the broken tank but also you don't end up with suddenly epileptic fish on the carpet!

Sorry, your post made me think of what his tank would look like smashed, empty and his fish flapping on the floor and it reminded me of a crap joke- Paddy goes to the vet with his goldfish. "I think it's got epilepsy" he tells the vet.
Vet takes a look and says "It seems calm enough to me".
Paddy says, "I haven't taken it out of the bowl yet".
Like I said not a great joke but hopefully explains my train of thought!
