Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Here is a few pics of my new inhabitants, the first in the tank.
(the first fish i have owned on about years)

Was in LFS and saw them, was kind of thinking of getting them after seeing some in display tanks, hadnt planned on getting them today at all, but as soon as i saw them that was it. Well happy. Got 6 of them, all males (AFSIK)

Hope you enjoy my pics

Lovely colours and they stand out well from the dark substrate- good choice and nice tank.

Nice one!! I feel that so many good Fish are overlooked to make way for rare types, the colours on that Barb are outstanding, again, nice one. Get one or two Females, it really spices up things in a positive way, they will not change their temperament, in fact they will spend their time flirting outrageously and their colours will intensify even more.

Would anyone mind if I made a request for Posters to give details on what Camera etc they used for their Photos when posting?

Kev.

Good idea about camera info. Photography is another hobby of mine :) I took these with a Pentax k-r with an 18-55 mm lens. To be honest i just shot off a few quick ones for the forum in moving object setting.

One thing to note, a DSLR will focus thought glass so are far superior in getting a good shot. Compact or point & shoot cameras cant focus through glass very well, so quite often there are lots of reflections in the final image.

For a quickie shot, that's darn good, I have a 600D, maybe you can give me some tips.

Aperture mode would give best results, no flash, dark room, tank lights on. the pic will have a nice blurred background and a good sharp focus on the fish. you will have to snap off a few pics to get one good pic tho because the fish move fast, and you will get a few blurred images, but that's ok. Thats what the delete button is for! The auto focus on the camera should be set to one central point (as opposed to multiple auto focus points, this is important to get the fish in sharp focus). Track the fish with the shutter button half pressed to get the auto focus going, your lens will start whirring like mad but this is ok, its trying to get the focus right on a moving object. Then wait for the fish to stop for a second, or turn, then fully press the shutter button once the red focus dot is on the fish and the lens stop whirring,to get the snap.

a 35mm zoom (or a prime lens if you are lucky enough to have one) will give best results, if the final pic leaves the fish too small in the pic, you can crop in on him, your 600d is more than capable of producing a high pixel image to do this with. You may need to brighten the pic in Photoshop when using aperture mode, the brightness of the aquarium lighting will trigger a fast shutter speed so the initial image will be a bit on the dark side, but still OK, the actual fish will be in good focus though, so nice sharp details. (If you don't have photoshop, more often than not using the auto correct in windows picture manager give a decent result)

Thanks a mil, I'll get cracking tomorrow, did notice before on Ap mode that the Photos appeared a tad on the dark side.

Cheers,

Kev.

Great pictures and wonderful fish .
The Odessa barbs are very colourful.
Are you going to look at maybe getting some Ruby barbs as their colours and actions when courting are great to watch.

I was thinking of getting dome boesmani rainbows to go in there as their mates.

Have to say im still over the moon with this odessas, they eat wafers from my hand (an my daughters hand) even if i put my finger in the tank they will nip and play with my finger and let me stroke them!

I was doing some trimming of my plants and they nipped and tickeled at my arms the whole time, very playful little fellas.

Really enjoyed those photos and the colours are just amazing. Real live-wires of fish but never found them to be tame! Great job although I'm a little envious!
