Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

This is an account detailing my tank.
First off picked up a Rio 180
Ordered an Eheim Ecco Pro 300 - 2036 External filter
Picked up a black background in Easons which I will attach to the tank
Also picked up some playsand from Early Learning Centre but might end up going with Maidenhead Aquatics sand.
Tank will be cleaned in the coming days and then cyled.
Planned stocklist for this tank is some Discus, Rummynose/Cardinal Tetra & Brochis Splendens (Emerald Cat)
I will keep this page updated with progress.
Would be interested to hear what people think.
PS: First time adding pics so I hope this works!

The light unit on the tank is acting up and preventing me getting good pics and I was away recently.

Thanks also for your help with resolving the juwel light issue (ballast).
I'll get it cycled and then plan to to add plenty of large pieces of bogwood and a small amount of easy to grow plants (anubias, etc)
Was in a LFS yesterday and saw about 15-20 Rummynose schooling in their own tank. Looked amazing and that's what I want to start with first

No worries mate anytime
Have you wired the new ballast yet if you have a issue doing it and have the bits im in Dublin tomorrow for most off the day i can help you out with it (its handy being an electrician

Everyone for them self but i love the look off red moor wood and i think you can not beat it in a planted tank so keep an eye put for it and you will see what its like you might like it
Yes rummies every time i had them in all the planted tank i had before i broke them down i had between 60 or 70 in a 500L very heavy planted tank and everyone that seen it could not believe it as this looked out off this world you can not beat a large shoal off them and them all swimming together

I'll have a look at the red moor. Thanks.
How big of a shoal of Rummynose could I get away with in a 180Litre running an Eheim Ecco Pro 300 - 2036 External filter?
Cheers

Here is a long overdue update...
I feel something is missing. Can anyone suggest something? There is too much open space - or maybe I have too much bogwood and not enough plants?
Would red moor roots look better?
Cheers
personally i would try and stand some of the bog wood up a bit more , creat some angles . Saying that a nice piece of moor would be great , If you have the option you should try the moor

Not much of an update but decided to post a current pic.
I think the tank looks very bare. Any suggestions on some plants for this tank?
i would be adding some rocks ( prob sandstone ) , trying to stand up some of the wood , making it more interesting looking , with tunnels etc .. maybe get some moor wood , more rooty looking . That would be cooooooooooooooly

I've just been reading back over this Thread and I think the Moor Wood would really help add some height and nice natural angles/shapes to the Tank, I must admit that I love the abstract nature of some of the shapes You find in Moor Wood, I think Bog Wood can look a bit Flat or dull sometimes in comparison, although don't get Me wrong, Bog Wood can be very effectively arranged...
So I'd say some nice pieces of Moor Wood complemented with some nice Plants would make it feel less bare...
again reading through Your thread, I see You mention wanting a few easy to grow plants (anubias, etc)
So here's a few suggestions, You might like:
Anubias Congensis
really like this Plant, some huge Specimens in Work at the moment...
Anubias hastifolia
love this Plant, cool leaf shape, very easy to keep...
Anubias heterophylla
Nice big Plants & again very easy...
Microsorum pteropus
Crinum thaianum
cool Plant, grows at a mental rate...
crinum natans
Crinum calamistratum
This is the Plant that got Me first interested in Plants, one of My Favourites...

Limnophila sessiliflora
love this Plant, handy enough to keep for a soft stemmed Plant...
Echinodorus horemanii Red
handy enough to keep for a Red Plant...
Echinodorus Scarlet Snake
again handy enough to keep for a Red Plant...
there are loads more but this should give You a few ideas maybe
hope it Helps

Hi All,
I will be setting up a Rio 180 as a South American themed tank in the coming weeks.
Planned stocklist for this tank is Peruvian Scalare, Rummynose/Cardinal Tetra & Brochis Splendens (Emerald Cat)
I will keep this page updated with progress.
Would be interested to hear what people think.
PS: First time adding pics so I hope this works!
Hi

2 questions :
1.Where in Easons did you get this background, is it just paper or what it is?
2.Are you happy with your Eheim filter in terms of flow, is it strong enough for 180/200l?
Thanks
Sina

If you go into Easons O'Connell St - 1st floor. It's over to the right of the store past the checkout area - it's like cardboard and it comes in various colours and thickness. It's brilliant for backgrounds

I am very happy with the Eheim. There is a good flow from it too. I have the Eheim Ecco Pro 2036 and I bought it from here: (I think I paid around €100 for it)

I have a friend who swears by the Eheim Classic External:

Sina - here are a few pics to show how the tank is now looking. Latest additions to the tank have been some Rummynose Tetra. Planning to add some Bolivian Rams very soon. Discus are around 10months old now.
I'd be interested to hear people's thoughts
