Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I remember asking a friend of my Father's who worked in Dublin Zoo, how the Giraffe managed not to get a Headache when it was drinking, the blood must flow right to it's relatively small Head, here is how they avoid a Migraine !!

A giraffe's Heart, which can weigh up to 25lb (10 kg), has to generate around double the normal blood pressure for a large mammal in order to maintain blood flow to the brain against gravity. In the upper neck, a complex pressure-regulation system called the the rete miribale prevents excess blood flow to the brain, when the giraffe lowers its head to drink. Conversely, the blood vessels in the lower legs are under great pressure (because of the weight of fluid pressing down on them). In other animals, such pressure would force the blood out through the capillary walls. Giraffe, however, have a very tight sheath of thick skin over their lower limbs which maintains high extravascular pressure in exactly the same way as a pilot's g-suit.

Very good, they can't keep there head below the level of there heart for very long, besides this is when they are at there most vulnerable from predators,it's called splaying when they spread the two front legs to lower there head for a drink, that's why we have all the drinkers in the house at around 16ft high for the adults and 4 for the calfs, and contrary to what people say they don't sleep they go into a type of trance for the reason you mentioned above.

That's an awesome job and my dream one since i was a kid just never worked out.

On another note i do have a chimpanzee named after me in Dublin zoo, well he's
probably long gone by now use to know an old boxer that was friends with one of the old keepers.

What a job!
All those years ago (when I almost 'lived' in London Zoo) (on Saturdays) I always dreamed of a job there when I left school.
Hey ho - perhaps next time around!
