Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I'm not tôo good with live plants so excuse the silly question!
Is there anything along the back wall that will fill the back of the tank as it grows?

It's still a work in progress. This photo will give you a better idea of where the plants are positioned,

I'm hoping whats there will grow a bit more over time to cover some of the back wall. There is some gaps! I'll add more plants, but if you look right at the bottom of the wall, there's a return pipe from the filter. I have a "T" piece connection on it. There's also a couple of stones there too, to deflect the flow of water from the pipe and stop moving the sand everywhere. Putting plants tight against the wall isn't really practical.

looking very natural, i like it big time, you might consider a background for the tank either a tape on job or paint the back of the tank, a blue coloured background might give a greater feel of depth... other than that my only suggestion would be maybe some mosses on the bog wood and a nice big motherplant for the back middle section as it looks a little bare there... but overall really impressed
I can't put a background on, the black is on the inside of the tank. There's filter compartments behind the black.

the Tank is lovely, fair play to Ya
the bentosi are lovely, they're a cracking Fish !!!
I like the Black Back Ground too
I'd say a few Crinum calamistratum would look great in there some where
and if You have the desire to add any more Fish, I'd say a load of Rummynose Tetra would look great...

Here it is now,

It still needs a little something on the right hand side and I plan on adding more Eleocharis Acicularis along the front, there's a small bit behind the stone to the right.

Thanks for the comments.
I'm thinking of taking the big plant in this photo out of the tank and moving the plants in front of it back a bit. This will give me more open space and the opportunity to add a few medium growing plants if I want.
I do need to increase my Cardinals alright, there was 27 last count, not sure how many are still there, probably 20 anyway.

It gives me a lot more open space in the middle. I think it turned out quite well. Still not 100% happy with the right hand site though.

The CO2 level is about 25ppm, not 100% sure of that. Will check the reading tomorrow and confirm. I use the JBL test kit and it's within the recommended level. It's about 3-4 bubbles per second.
The lighting at the moment is only on for about 3-4 hours a day. Where the tank is positioned, I get direct sunlight on it from above through a skylight. During June and July I didn't have the lights on at all. As the sun starts to get a bit lower now, I put them on for a couple of hours in the evening, or from about 5pm on a dull day. During the winter, I would have them on from 1pm - 9pm.
Lights go out at 9pm no matter what.
CO2 comes on at 12pm - 8pm.
I do 20% water change every two weeks, but am thinking of dropping this down to once a month. The water is crystal clear. My Nitrates were down to 0, so I've had to add nitrates to the tank to bring it up to about 10ppm.
Fish are all healthy and plants are pearling away, which is nice to see.

I think the slight rearrangement was a sound choice.
The tank looks bigger now and there's definitely more depth, more of a 3d effect.
Keep up the good work,
Andreas

Anyway, here's how it's looking at the moment,

Uploaded with ImageShack.us
It's much more open at the moment and the water movement has increased a lot since the sword was removed. I'll see how it develops over the next few weeks.
At the moment I'm a bit undecided as to whether I like it or not!

The tetras are coming to the end of their lives, probably have most of them 2 or 3 years. When they do eventually die, I plan on replacing them with one big shoal of a tetra that I've never kept before. Haven't decided which type yet.

). There's also a load of Endlers.

Echinodorus aflame
Hygrophila corymbosa
Taxiphyllum barbieri
Alternanthera reineckii
Echinodorus grisebachii
There's also a bit of Java Fern and I'm not sure of the name of the grass type plant that's growing at the front.

Was never really happy with the positioning of the wood the last time, but my little helper was, so I had to leave it. Didn't really like the rocks either, but again the little assistant did, so my opinion counted for nothing

Anyway managed to convince him that the tank needed a new look. Played about with the pieces of wood trying to find an arrangement I liked, then it happened. It just clicked. I really like the positioning of it at the moment. It's two large pieces but looks like one big root. There's a little bit of Java fern up the middle to hide the join. I added a couple more new plants at the back, which should fill out the bare look of the back of the tank. I trimmed down some of the valis type plants at the side and replanted some of it on the right hand side. The grass down the front is spreading well too.
I just need to add a few more fish.
