Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I got my mudskippers today, 5 Periophthalmus septemradiatus. They're just as I hoped; active, entertaining and about as oddball as they come. They climb incredibly well but their favourite spot seems to be on the rock beside the inflow, for obvious reasons.
The most surprising thing this evening though has to be watching the archerfish steal their food. Even though the bloodworms were placed on a slab that's at a 22o angle and a few inches from the water's edge, they still got as close as they could and hosed the food off the rocks! Gotta love this hobby

Thanks guys. I'll be making a few videos over the weekend and this'll be one of them. They're amazing to watch and it's extraordinary to watch them shimmy up the ivy branch. Makes me feel like arms and opposable thumbs are just an indulgence! What's especially funny is seeing one of them leap from the branch onto a nearby rock; I think he was trying to avoid having to swim!

Thanks Ian. They're very weird, idiosyncratic little fish. Every time I look into the tank they seem to be doing something unexpected; trying to eat a trumpet snail and realising they're not that good a meal, eating bubbles for what seems to be the hell of it or taking a flying leap from one place to another so they don't have to get their fins wet!
I've also got footage of one of the archers stealing food from the biggest male's mouth and I'm not entirely sure he wasn't trying to wind them up
I'll post that tomorrow.
Johnny.

Just some footage of my mudskippers and archers. The largest male mudskipper keeps putting his mouth in the water when he's eating bloodworms and each time the archers practically beach themselves to get the food... and yet he keeps doing it!

thanks guys. I added a small extra piece of bogwood just a little while ago. when I put it in the tank a small spider I hadn't realised was on it rushed to the top of it to escape the water. he was there about 3 seconds before a mudskipper lashed across the tank. took a flying leap onto the wood and scarfed him down  :P
