Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

In the for sale section I mentioned not to keep teloscopic goldfish with paradise fish and this is the reason. I took this photo a few weeks ago but only found it now when I was searching through the camera card. I think its worth a post. I really like how the scale at the end of the body overlap the actual tail. Plus the flash hitting the debris on the water surface gives it that something extra.

are both eyes gone?

Yeah both eyes are gone. It wasn't for the faint of heart as the paradise fish had simple removed the eyes from the sockets and there were just hanging down the side of the fish by the optic nerve. I had to catch the poor fella and remove the eyes with a scalpel, wasn't very pretty.

I agree, and surprisingly enough it had put on more size then the other more with both eyes. Go figure?

What piece of equipment are you using

I have a Fuji FinePix s7000 (point and shoot with a couple of extras) but the most important part is the wireless flash slave. From my experience, light and lots of it is the most important aspect of taking photos of fish. If you don't have sufficient light you will only get blurred photos. You can use any sort of additional light i.e. desk lamps, torches, extra flo tubes etc. Just don't let them fall into the tank.

Pro focusing

I pre focus on an object outside the tank, lock the focus (half depress the shutter release) and then turn the camera on the tank and then trigger the shutter release when something comes within the focus rang.

Thanks for all the comments

There isn't really much for him to crash into, he sometimes gets stuck in the plants for a bit but he manages to swim his way free. He has been blind now for about two and a half years and is still going strong. In terms of feeding him, I feed them sinking goldfish pellets as fancy goldfish are susceptible to gulping too much air at the surface therefore causing digestion problems, once the food goes in the water he picks up the scent and swims to the bottom where he hoovers around and eats what he can. If at any stage I though he was suffering I would have given him the knife in the back of the head treatment.

Even though he has lost his eyes he won't really have a problem finding his way because of the lateral line that runs the length of all fishes bodies.

They feel with that a bit like a cat feels with it's whiskers in the dark. :D

More fantastic shots Tanks a lot.
