Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

There are some photos from the fish show at the link below. I won't post them here as there are too many for dial-ups connections to deal with.

Strange choice for an aquarium fish by Denis. No wonder there are no fish left in the Grand Canal if they all end up in Denis' tanks :D Takes me back though. My first fish were crucian carp...

Nope not my fish, it belonged to the kids who owned the 1000's of kribs in the plastic vase. They also owned the Anguilla anguilla which looked stunning but one day I fear that fish will start disappearing in its tank!!! :(

I doubt fish will start disappearing in the tank with this eel. There are two distinct morphes with eels. One that feeds mainly on worms, slugs and the like as seen in the picture and one that feeds mainly on small fish. This morphe has a much broader head than the one in the picture,

When you say morph! Is it a genetically different strain or is it a morphological change in body shape that the fish undergo as a result of adapting to a specific food source. I can only image that it is the first one!

Just to make you aware that they also keep common minnows as well as the roach/rudd hybrids in the cold water setup and I can easily see the former being snatched by the eel.

genetically they are the same species, however, if you look at an eel that lives in a lake/river with a low fish/invertebrate ratio (few fish vs plenty of worms etc) you will find that all eels will have a fairly narrow head, whereas if there are plenty of easy to catch/dead fish they will have a broad head. Once they have established their feeding habits it is almost impossible tro switch them around

 Sorry tanks_alot. That eel was in their coldwater tank for the last four years, they caught it in Wexford from memory. It looks like it has stopped growing or at least is not growing very much or it would be huge by now.

as far as I know the kids and dad caught it in the grand canal when it was only the length of a finger and they have it fro years as Daragh said. It is really a gorgeous eel and silky to the touch. As far as I know it is in a cold water set up that is plumbed through an old fridge to keep the temperature down. There are all kinds of indiginous species in with it and all mostly caught in local rivers, canals or on a hook

Plumbed thru a fridge! Brilliant, they seem to be a pretty inventive family, loved their livebearers tank, it looked like something from the Kypton Factor. They will be very well educated kids.
