Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

After getting asked a few times now by posts and PM's. I have had permission to post this tutorial to try and help you guys take better pictures. ( Cheers Anthony. ) If you have any questions or things you want to add to this please let me know.

1. First and foremost. Make sure that the tank glass is clean inside and out. ( Don't use chemical cleaners anywhere near your tank. Most of them contain ammonia and we all know what that can do!).

To clean the outside of the tank use white vinegar a clean soft cloth and a soft tooth brush for the stubborn bits.

Soak the cloth with vinegar and wipe all over the glass scrub the glass with the tooth brush where needed and then wipe off and polish with kitchen paper or another soft, clean, dry cloth.
Remember the cleaner your glass the better and clearer picture you will get.

2. For best results. Try to take your pictures in the dark. Turn off ALL lights, TV & any other light source in and around the room. Leave tank lights on.

3. You get a better, clearer picture if you take a shot from a slight right to left angle and slightly above the middle of the fish you want a picture of.

4. Either cover your flash with 3 layers of thin white paper the same size as your flash. or try angling the flash in such a way that it won't flare back off the glass spoiling your shot. Practice makes perfect. The more you practice and try out different settings. You will soon learn and be able to remember what settings work best with your camera.

5. Your ISO ( read your camera manual ) setting will depend on what camera you have. If you have a macro setting try getting used to using it. If your lucky enough to have a macro lens for your camera then that is even better. You can still get pretty good shots with a normal lens though.

Hope this helps you some. Happy snapping.

Jill

Resizing your pictures

Resizing your pictures is really easy if you have a free account with any of the following :-

Photo Bucket

Photo Chicken

Flickr etc

I use photo bucket so I can only comment on how it is done on there.

You take your image from the file you have it stored in and load it into photo bucket using the \" Browse \" buttons. You then click on the \" upload \" button and your picture will load.

When it has finished up loading you will see it below in it's own link section.

You will see your image and above the image you will see :-

Move

Edit

Share

Delete

Click on \" Edit \"

Once the image has uploaded into the box that appears. You will see at the top.

Full size

Re size

Rotate

Share

Delete

Click on \" Re size \" and these choices will pop up.

Avatar ( 100 x 75 )

Thumbnail ( 160 x 120 )

Website / e mail ( 320 x 240 )

Message Board ( 640 x 480 )

15\" screen ( 800 x 600 )

The option marked in RED on here. Is the one you want for this forum.

Once the photo has re sized right click on the image and save back into your original picture file. You will have to change the title of the image so you don't replace your original picture in the file.

You then just do the same as above with the re sized image and load it back into photoBucket.

All you do then is look where the image is and look below it.

You will see 3 link choices.

URL Link

HTML Tag

IMG Code

I have always used the IMG Code as this pastes the image onto the forum.

All you do is right click on the \" IMG Code \" and then paste it onto the thread your starting.

The code should be transferred onto the page so when you submit your post the image should show up. ( always best to preview post first just to check. )

I hope you can follow this ok.

Any problems please let me know.

Cheers Jill.
