Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

i pose unlike a good few of the members here im just a baby to fishkeeping et alii. but even so i decided very quickly that the plastic stick on background wasnt for me. so i made one! in 3d!!
hope i posted these pics right!

unfortunatly this background broke when it started floating so here is the new one.

i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj116/suckers_2008/14jan007.jpg

once the tank is replanted with the old plantd and bogwood i hope the crushed coral sand will set off the different colouring in the background. the shiny effect disapears by the time the tank has cycled( i know from the last one( about 6 days of constant waterchanging twice a day!))
ill post pics again when everything is set up

Nice job,

Can I ask about filtration? Do you use an internal or an external? How do you get around the problem of areas of dead water behind the 3D background or is the back of the background flush against the back of the tank leaving no room for water.

Looking forward to seeing new 3D in a tank situation!

By the way, if you want the images to appear automatically in your post put some \"img\" brackets around them.

i.e.

{img}i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj116/suckers_2008/21to28dec008.jpg{/img}

only replace the { } with [ ] for all brackets!

Lead me not into temptation, For I can find it myself!

im using an external filter with the inlet(into the filter) in the bottom right hand corner of the tank.

It is/was just below the breeding net. The second filter is internal just for water movement for the cory fry. The background had between 1 inch and 6 inchs behind it where i had the air lines, filterpipe work, heater, and a 3rd very small filter with the sponge filter taken off. This stopped dead water both thru the back and thru the front of the background via extra hidden pipework, there was also extra water movement in the bottom of the tank via modified airlines connected to the return spray bar to create a slow current from the bottom of the tank upwards and towards the filter inlet. On the left hand side of the background i stuck strips of carbon filter(juwel variety)to aid water movement.
Untill the day the background floated i had crystal clear water which i think was because the filter was at the bottom of the tank with the spray bar running in the opersite direction i.e at 90 deg to each other.
I hope at least someone gets some insperation form some of this.
I know ive learnt alot from my mistakes esp. removing more polystrylene and using fibreglass matting on the inside of the displays to strengthen them and also using different types of concrete for colouration instead of buying dye's.

Edit : change suffix for picture to appear - Valerie
