Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

and the state of the tank they came in (this is not for the fainthearted, if you have a weak stomach look away now:laugh: )

filterfloss hadn't been changed for 18 months

filter sponges had a fine thick layer of gooo

tank had shards of a plant pot, sea shells and various algae covered ornaments wich were taken and disposed of
(spongebob covered in algae is not my cuppa tea)

and a few pics of the inhabitants, the morning after their transport

I think I have 1 male 2 female in there, I know the tank is a bit on the small side for them, but they will be looked after better by me than they were in the last 18 months by their last owners who were glad to get rid of them.

That is horrible............ makes me so angry to see stuff like that why do people let things get so bad its a small enough tank it would take 20mins to 30mins a week to clean if even that much.

Dont no the story behind why they were left like that so wont say any more bout it but thank god they are being looked after now and with people who will have the time and no how to take care how them hope they are doin much better and good luck.

they are still a bit shy but coming around slowly, the tank is by no means clean yet, I didn't want to stress them any more than I had to. I would love to change their substrate to sand eventually, but tryin to tackle all the algea is a first priority, then I have some pieces of slate rock wich I want to put in there, and a background is also a priority, lots of work to do for me.
They didn't have a heater in their tank and the water was freezing, so I purchased one in blanchardstown yesterday and am slowly adjusting the temperature, not too fast I don't want them to get Ich, it is at 20 now and wil slowly up it every couple of days, till it's at 26.

I'll get there, and hey, they might even breed for me eventually:woohoo:

Great job Mrs F.
Poor fish must of been having a horrible time in there, will prob take them a small while to get used to the clean water!!! Id put something in to keep them from getting too stressed after all the changes and the temperature increase also, maybe something like Stress zyme.Amazing how they survived at all actually. Well done for the rescue and cheers for sharing!
By the way Mrs F you are now officially hooked complety on the hobby, everytime Im on you have either breed some fish or got new ones!!!

Well the fish are settling in quite well, enjoying the variety of food I serve them and now 4 days later, the tank is heating up to 22 degrees, the male and the biggest female(all coloured up, see if you can guess where this is going) are doing a little dance around each other, pecking at each other and even liplocking. Didn't take long, did it.

I am however now a bit worried for the smaller female, if these two do spawn that that will be the end for her, should I put the small female in the community tank wile the other two are getting jiggy, or should I rehome her, or should I leave her there and see how it goes:blush:

Having noticed this and other various Sneaky goings on (reefpaddy and his quick tank set-up ..While the wife is away ) and indeed myself and my "No love ... Micro worms are not smelly" goings on has led me to think that all aquarist's are really BIG FAT LIARS....................... Discuss..........:) :) :) :) :)

My husband is contemplating building a house on his ma's site, he was all busy drawing the plans and doing the measurements, when I asked him where my 10ft tank , and all the other ones were going to go, he told me there be no fishtanks in the house, I replied; if there is no fishtanks there I won't be in that house either (put my foot down:lol: )

b.t.w. he knows about the whiteworm culture in the hotpress now, (just in casse he was going to feed it to the kids one morning :X :X)
