My tanks
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi Adrian, They water change system you have sounds great , you want to see the things I've tried in the past for water changes. Ah Think you have your hands full with the 300 ltr with 8 discus in it already. How often do you do water changes in the 500ltr tank and how often ? I'm re-setting up my 840 ltr tank at the moment and trying to figure out how much water I should be changing weekly , I have set up a resevoir holding about 140 ltrs and was planning twice weekly maybe mondays and thursdays for example , Just looking for an idea of what to expect. Last time I had it very heavily planted so all parameters were very stable and everything was always 0ppm ammonia nitrate nitrite. This time it wont be as heavily planted as I would like to see the fish this time. Other set up looked like an overgrown garden didn't know what was in it till I stripped it out, took out over 2 dozen ottocinclus that I didn't put in along with tetra's etc Started out with about 8 otto's couldn't believe they bred couldn't do that if I tried.
Cheers
Alan.

Hi Adrian
Fantastic looking tanks there...Tell me - on your 500L do you not have problem's with the Hatchetfish jumping or do you have coverglasses fitted...?

The 300L tank looks very empty with the 8 wild tefes they shoal very close together not like the domestic strain that are all over the tank. Drop in sometime and you'll see what i mean.
In all the tanks i change water everytime i think that they need it once or twice a week 20-25%. If i do it twice a week, in the 500L only, i tend to leave 3 days between them not to stress the fish to much (wednesday and sunday). In the 300L i do it only once a week because i have a filter that is way to big for it and i dont have to, and because the discus like to pick at the dirt in the tank especially now that i have 3 royal panaques (L190), that make lots of waste, in with them. I learned a lot about the wild discus from "Bleher's Discus" book and i want to try to keep them as close to the wild conditions as i can. Even today i saw two of them doing the "dance", i think that they are male and female because they have the best colouration out of the 8 and they hang around together. Well, i can only hope

i wont be home until the end of next month, going in holiday in a week time, but after i come back we'll arrange something.
Lar
I have a glass cover over the tank but i started with 15 marble hatchets and now i have only 5 left they find the smallest gap between the glass cover and in/out pipes from the externals to jump out. I'll be adding some silver hatchets to the tank because they grow much bigger
