Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi,
It looks deadly. what is the substrate and how does your snail and plants get along. I have one and he happily munches on the plants and even the few casualties I had. I have to put loads of cabbage, cauliflower, spinach in as well to keep him off the live plants

PS Is it tropical or coldwater

thanks for all the compliments..!!:) sadly there is something wrong with the tank... 9 fish have died in the last 5 days.! but i think its fine now:unsure: hopefuly!! the remaining fish seem perfectly fine!!
anyways the tank is tropical!
check out this link www.applesnail.net/
you probably have a Pomacea canaliculata... they will eat your plants even if u pop in veg!!
i have 2 Pomacea bridgesii they dont touch the plants.. and will eat any dead fish! also you should check out zebra snails!!

look at the diagrams on the link i sent(just click species).. will help you identify your snail!! if you have a canaliculata id advise bringing it back and maybe you could swap it for a brigesii.. (gold apple snail) just check out the shell and make sure its right one b4 u bring it home.!!

ah and the substrate its sicilia sand!! s

Hi Alex, nice tank. The frogbit gives the tank a nice look.
I cant help with the fern, i dont recognize it as an aquatic fern. Maybe it's some type of pond fern for the edge of a pond were the roots would be in the water and the leaves out of the water. Nice plant though.
The Endlers look like they were crossed with Guppy's at some stage. Unfortunately this happens a lot which is a shame since (as far as i know) all wild populations are gone.
Some day when it's hard to get true Endlers people will look back and regret mixing them with Guppy's.

EDIT; just looking at the plant again. It looks like an Anubias. Maybe Anubias caladifolia (spelling).

thanks but i dont think it is.... the leaves are same shape as weed leaves! and now there are little cacti (well looks like cacti.. little green blobs with spikes) growing on the leaves with roots coming out of em!!
yeah id say roots should be in water leaves out... will it eventually die if left submerged?

It was the leaf in the last picture that made me think it was Anubias.
The small bits on the leafs you describe sound like new young plants. I think this is common with ferns. I find when this happens with the likes of javafern the leaf the new plantlet is growing from will die off. It is almost like the new plant is feeding of the leaf.
It is hard to say if it will die off or not without knowing what the plant is.
