Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Looks to me as it was originally painted and it had started to chip off! But i could be wrong. Nice looking tank all the same.

Could you also give me an identification on the plants I have highlighted and how well they grow for you?

Lead me not into temptation, For I can find it myself!

I think, the one on the bog wood is Microsorium pteropus "Windelov.
Can't make out the small ones in the gravel, Echinodorus tennellus just planted?

It looks alot like Tennellus alright, I was looking to get alot of it for the bottom of my new tank, any plants I've got locally turned to mush within hours.

Tom,
try to get Echinodorus quadricostatus. Much better than tenellus. A bit bigger but grows a lot faster and is much easier to keep. E. tennellus very often suffers from a growth of black hair algae on it since decaying food/plant matter/faeces gets stuck between the fine leaves and you will get micro pockets of nitrate/phosphate. This will even happen with good water movement since E. tennellus grows very dense.

Will have a look around for it, alternatively I've seen some very similar plastic plants that look just the same, might go down that route.

Cheers

Hi guys,

The plants are pretty easy to look after. They weren't anywhere near that condition until I added my DIY CO2 (see my post in the plants section). I just need to clear the dead leaves every couple of weeks and add Florenette A root fertilising tablets and Leaf Zone liquid every couple of weeks. I was adding every week, but kept getting algae. Once every two to three weeks seems to be enough.

The stuff you see in the background is algae! I have one of those crappy picture backgrounds that my wife liked (I'm going to replace it with a plain one soon). It was a lot worse than than until I got my two Starlight Bristlenoses. They're fantastic algae eaters.

The plant on the bogwood was rightly identified as Microsorum Pteropus. The grass is Anubias Diverse (according to the card that came with it). That wasn't doing well at all until I added the CO2. Since then it has new shoots and turned a nice lush green colour.

The Microsorum Pteropus hasn't grown so well. However the CO2 has also helped it. The fact it's convered in Algae doesn't do it any favours. I plan on trimming it down to see how it does.

Most of the plants are from Wackers so Gavin may be able to positivly ID the grass.

Regards,

Ken.

Anubias what ? Diverse? I would imagine that's trade name. Scientific it ain't . Anubias are all fairly broad leafed plants. I can't make it out properly in your picture. Could you post a close up?

I'll post a close up tomorrow. It's basically a dwarf grass. It has hardly grown at all since adding to my tank a couple of months ago.

Ken.

The grass type plant is more than likely Eleocharis parvula or Eleocharis acicularis, probably the first one, it would grow better if you seperated it when planting rather than having it bunched up like you do now, it propagates by runners so with lots of small bunches planted instead of one main one, it will spread a lot quicker, although still slowly if its in a low light setup.

I was going to start a thread in the planted section on how to plant different plant species properly documented with pictures if your interested, I have some E.tennellus which I could show as well, its pretty much the same for all grass type plants.

I will post it up in the next day or so.

Thanks Zig. I'll give that a try. I got a couple of Festivus Cichlids in Brittas today and they are intent on digging the grass up. The clump circled in the photo above has been reset twice tonight. I think a kick up the ar*e might be in order!

Ken.

I don't think I'll need worry too much about the grass. The two Festivus Chiclids are intent on ripping it up and eating. I've reset it five times so far. They've one nearly eaten down to the roots. They don't seem to be bothering with any other plants.

Feckin Festivus!

Ken.
