Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Thank you very much for your kind opinions. :) Oliver Knott would probably die from laught seeing such comparison

Joey, I had been living in Portlaoise for 3 years till July, 2010 when I decided to move to Wexford. But my heart beats always for IMAS and I will do my best to join our meeting next year. I wanted to come for Christmas party but I was affraid of driving on ice...

ocean rock has been removed from the tank as I learnt it cointained calcium (vinegar test) that could make a lot of problems in freshwater tank - increase of water hardness. It is good for marine, tanganica but not for my tank. So, I have to change some things in it...

I would like to show you my tank (that is not as nice as yours and especially Tim-Frontosa's) before tomorrow first cutting plants. Unfortunately I still have not proper lighting tubes that influence the condition of my plants. In the nearest future I would like to add willow moss or glossostomia. What else would you suggest me to add or change in it on my long way to nicely design planted tank. (I have no idea why the first pics of the tank taken in December are not seen.}

looks marvellous, some lovely colours in there!

is that Heteranthera zosterifolia i see in the back, just to the right of centre? if it is, and you are cutting it back, any chance of some spare cuttings?

also what are the red plants and do they do well under medium light & no co2?

Hi Joey,

I think it is Heteranthera zosterifolia but I am not sure. I should check it in my notes. Yes, I will be cutting these ones too. My intention was just to plant the tops next to the existing ones but if I have some spare ones - they are yours.

The red plants are alternanthera rosaefolia. They can survive under medium light but as all no-green coloured plants they require more light to show their beauty. Plants were bought in December and are growing up. I don't have CO2 yet, so I think it is not so important in their respect. But obviously CO2 is needed for planted tanks especially if you would like to have some special ones, more demanding than hard ones.

Joey, I'm going to order a CO2 set next week and should have it within 2 weeks and then I will be able to describe difference in growing and condition of my plants.

are you getting much algae? if no, then co2 might not be needed if all plants are growing at even a low rate without withering away. its very impressive as a low maintainance tank, i wish my clown loaches weren't punching holes in broad leafed plants else i'd have more options

No, I don't have much problems with algae. The biggest problem I am facing at the moment is lighting. It is old and insufficient for plants. Moreover, I have one marine lighting tube intead of plant growing tube. But surprising it is fortunate situation that the tubes are old and do not make too much harm to plants and fish. i ordered new tubes but I was delivered wrong sizes and have to wait for a new delivery. I would like to have more demanding plants and therefore would like to buy CO2. I have a good offer for a brand new set and I think quality is good. If you run low-tech tank you are limited to certain plants and I would like to avoid it.

My guppies were also very much interested in cabombas but since they are in new bigger tank they do not destroy anything.
