Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Serratus, I said I'd put a few pics of the tiny cheap-n-cheerful pick-n-mix Discus I got from you last year.

They have turned out to be rather nice fish, not bad for being just over a year old. :)

These were taken with the casio compact digital, so the full colours can't be seen.

They look great Ian. Especially for pic and mix.
Great even colouration and shape. Ive seen expensive Discus look ten time worse.

How many did you pick up off Drew?

I've not bought expensive Discus for donkey's years. I've done the expensive wild-caught stuff and German bred Discus (mad money in the past)

All of my present 4 tanks worth are full of 10 to 20 euro fish from a general 'mix' of fish.

This pair are 2 of 3 I bought at that time. The other one was pushed out, so is housed with a group I bought at a slightly different time from the 3 for 45 euro offer.

My other recent purchases have been a good few 10 euro discus from FFF and another 3 10 euro Discus from Drew. All looking very good for a cost little more than a good Ram.

To me.....if it ain't a wild Discus, it's a 20 euro fish max.

Nice purchase.

I have to admit the most ive paid for a Discus was €10 each. the rest were donations and pairs given away when they decided to breed.
I was never prepared to give up the space to raise the young.

It's been a while since i have been tempted by Discus but i've seen some lovely wild green's lately and some cracking yellow's that tempted me to set up a tank or two.

Cheers Serratus.
Now, these are not the 10 euro discus I got off you about 3 weeks ago though :) That would be a wonder (btw, they are doing well as well).

The ones above, it is great to see what colours came out of the pick-n-mix 'un-named' batch.
This pair, however, are not the best parents....they weekly lay 'dinner' for 2 days time! And will always lay the eggs on the one filter....no matter what other temptations I put in.
But, who knows....young fish, maybe they will raise some young, maybe not. I'm not overly bothered either way.

The cheap-n-cheerful discus take me back to when I started in Discus way back in 1972 when you had a choice of getting cheap ones straight off the parents sides (I used to get them sent on a train fron Devon) or splash out silly prices for German stock from the Highgate Aqaurist in London or get imported wild tattered efforts.
