Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

This would be ideal for a poll, but I don't know how to start a poll .....
What is your opinion on forum auctions?#
Personally I don't like them and the few that have taken place were badly organised and confusion reigned at the end of each as to who won etc.
IF there are to be forum auctions, can we finalise some rules. Here are a few suggestions as a starter:
- Photograph of fish / item should be provided in original posting.
- All bids must be public in the thread.
- Time period after auction that item will be held for collection / payment must be stated.
- A clear forum time and date must be given at the outset for the auction to end.
- Any queries must be responded to within 12 hours
Another suggestion would be to use ebay.ie and notify forum members of the listing on the thread on the forums and let ebay take care of all the techy stuff, automated bidding, payment etc.
Any comments?

I'll see if it's possible to set up a poll for this.

Personally, I think that the suggestion above would be the best way to do it. Especially in the case of an auction being held across several forums. I know the targeted population is rather limited, but this particular system would probably limit timing issues, and people possibly falling out over it.

But posts can be counted after an agreed amount of days anyway...so we can regard your answers as votes.

The most recent one was run with no rules and no clarity and no responses. It's lucky that Acara (and possibly others) ARE so laid back about it
The eBay option is a good suggestion as they have all their own well established rules and controls

This was a disaster from start to finish and depending on the opinions raised this will not be allowed repetition.
There is a pretty specific stipulation in the rules which says that if any item is offered for sale here but is also offered elsewhere then this must be made known.
I really don't think that Forum Auctions should be allowed to circumnavigate this - even though this was set on the AV Sponsor page.
Speaking very personally (and with a degree of discipline) this should never have been allowed in the first place (I blame the Administrator myself!!!).

There are many web auction software packages out there...
The software manages all the transactions and payments....but you would need an admin for this.
Just a thought, then there would be very little disputes.

This thread is for future auctions and should they be held.
Please refrain from bringing the old one up until the response is forthcoming.
John
And, whatever anyone does or says on any other forum is of no matter here, if you have a grievance air it personally, the phone number and email address is there in the Sponsors Section.
I understand you feel angry about this, it's only natural.

no way of having a real-time bidding type box thingy mi-jiggy yoke set up for auctions on here so just quick short replys with a bidding amount should do (ie people who post a bid ONLY put a number as a reply) at least it would be public and hopefully not make the thread too messy. maybe an item offered for auction on this forum shouldn't be auctioned elsewhere and vise-versa is one way to keep posted bids up to date

1. - The auction is open to just this forum.(to avoid any cross overs and mis haps).
2. - The auction item (ie.fish),2 pics of the fish is shown with a brief description.
3. - Announce a time for when the auction will commence and allow people the opportunity to ask any questions they may have prior to the start.(ie.allow a week or so).
4. - The auction commences at a set time such as 6pm or 7pm and runs for one hour max.
People place their bid inside this hour. The sponsor or seller now needs to ensure they are online throughout the auction as soon as it commences. No Pm's allowed to the seller. All bids are public.
5. - Each bid is an offer of a monetary amount and no questions or comments allowed. Any questions about the fish should be asked before the auction (see point 2 above)
6. - The auction ceases exactly an hour after the commencement.
Winner is the final post and the thread is locked immediately after to avoid any comments etc.

i agree with this post ,its by far the best way to run things ,no confusion no messingRun the auction on here but make it very clear that

If so; then it is hard to regulate as one cannot follow the bids everywhere. However i do understand they would want to get a high a price as possible for it. I mean wouldnt you?? Imagine you are auctioning your fish at starting price of 10 when you are hoping to sell it for near 100??what if bids reach only 20 or 30 ? Can they have minimal price set before a specimen be sold? then again this would not be true auction then?!?!!?
As John says....not easy to regulate here by any means.

Unfortunately it has got to this stage,it would have been nice to have had the auction run as it was intended, just a bit of fun.Fair play to Ian for giving it a go,but, alas,as usual when money is involved, things can go a little bit pear shaped.A shame really.
