Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi,

What brand aquariums do you have, and which do you rate as being the best. For the purpose of the survey I am going to assume that size doesn't matter (no laughter at the back! ) but just the functionality and ease of maintenance.

If I have missed a brand let me know please.

I have 2 Juwel, 1 clearseal tanks.

I have Juwel 450, 180, 70, 70 & 60, but has anyone seen the Rena ones in Aquatic Village, they look the business. Woun'd have bought one of them before the 450, if I had seen them. The snag with the Rena is they come with external filter / heater(s) made by Rena, so they would need to be replaced.

The Rena ones are nice alright. Some of the models listed here:

www.aquariumsdelivered.co.uk/catalog/aqu...-rena-c-107_109.html

Myself, used to have a Juwel Rekord 70, but have a Rio 400 on the way to which I'm going to add an external Eheim wet/dry filter in addition to the standard internal filter. Might try filling the internal filter with Siporax and crushed coral (buffer) to see does it make any difference.

I have a 240 litre tank from a Czech company called CAT-GATO. The reason I got it was the price - tank and stand for ALOT less than a Juwel - although it didn't come with the internal Juwel filter.

I actually think it's really really good for the price. [/b]

Hi Daragh,

I got mine from Glenn in Fins N'Things in Midleton, Cork.
I don't know how Glen brought it in - I'd give him a call to discuss if you are interested.

Cheers,

Rob

Thanx, I was just wondering really, how they could sell and ship a tank that size for that price. I think I have enough tanks for the moment, 22 wet and 3 dry.

Cheers

The fact it didn't come with the internal Juwel type filter is a bonus if you ask me. They take up space inside the tank and can take an age to mature from what I've heard. If I had a Juwel, I would remove the internal and add a good external filter. You can't beat them for reliability and water clarity.

Ken.

I have done exactly this with my two Jewel tanks.
I hated the Jewel filter at first sight, regardless of alleged decent performance.

If I were to review my two jewel tanks I would have to say that the tanks are very well made and make for a lovely piece of furniture.
They really look at home, er...at home.
Gripes would be the horrible internal filters and one of the heaters in my tanks had no numbers on it at all for setting temperature.
Then theres the lids.
They look nice when they are closed and I suppose if that s what they do 90% of the time then I can understand, but apart from that they are the worst designed and flimsiest pieces of rubbish I have ever seen.
You literally cannot close the lid on my 400 without supporting it in the middle, or you will break the equally crappy hinge bits at the end.
As soon as someone comes up with a decent alternate lid I'm buying them as its only a matter of time before I manage to break one of the floppy and ungainly lids and send it plummeting into the tank, probably taking out the unprotected flourescents on the way.

When I got this tank, I already had an Eheim external filter, but I bought an internal Fluval filter too. To be honest, I am really impressed with the Fluval internal. It really does suck alot of dirt out of the water. However, it doesn't look great and I have to try to camouflage it with bogwood and plants to an extent!

I've been looking to see if there is a good external filter that will give more power than my Eheim. Anyone got any recommendations? I find that it's okay, but it's probably working at max capacity. I think the one I have is the Eheim 2215 Classic External Filter, which is supposed to be suitable for aquariums up to 350 litres (77 gallons) and a maximum flow rate 620 litres per hour. It was perfect when I had the smaller Rio 125 tank, but now I think I wouldn't mind getting something a bit more powerful.

Any recommendations?

TetraTec or Fluval are also good. I have the Fluval 305 on my 240l and haven't had any problems with it. It's good for up to 300l, there's also a 405 which is good for 400l. The FX5 has had very good reviews, but is for very large tanks 500l+.

I don't have a TetraTec, but have heard very good things about them. THey are in the same ballpark pricewise as the Fluvals.

Eheim are very good, but tend to be pricey. It's worth taking a look on eBay. Lots of bargains to be had there.

Ken.
