Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

anyone else using one? we got 1 installed last week and so far its only costing us 15e for a weeks use of electricity. before now our bill has been progressively increasing with out last a/r being 600e... that is a savage saving for about the same use.
just wundering if anyone else is using them and has seen similar results?

No tanks running at the mo carpman.
Were with board gais and they couldn't explain our bills so we told them we wanted to try a meter. They fitted 1 soon after. Ours have a box on the mains feed and another plugged in in the sitting room. You can buy topups in certain shops.
I've been told its like that at the start but will increase eventually (hopefully not by much) but I was also advised to get an electrician to check its fitted safely because apparently most aren't. Hopefully though it'll continue to be as beneficial as the past week although I'd say a budget plan would be easier with it than without because ye can see how much is on it.
I'm interested In people's experience with them too if any :)

ya thats the same as the one i got in and it seems to me that it not that expensive to have in your house there was €5 in it and it still in it only after topping up now it was esb networks that fitted mine so think im safe enough !!! i have 3 tanks running at my house 2 external on 2 of them but there the new jbl and it pays to buy low wattage equipment !!!

Careful though, we had one back in college, went home for christmas and came back to a very dark and cold house! Metre ran out when we were away. Only had one tank with one fish at the time, he'd burried himself under some stones and looked positively gone. Water was down below 10 degrees, did what we could and after 3 to 4 days laying on his side he started eating again, another couple days feeding and some weird swimming he actually righted himeself! Had him for another 7 years after that! Oldest fish I've had, was with me for 15 years..

Cheers for that rolly and glad to hear it turned positive in the end :)

were with board gas but there's a company called prepay power that a friend of ours went with and their being charged 80c/day for the service.... that has made their bill more expensive than before but they went against our advice to go into arrears because they had too good a track record to get 1 off their original provider. So far our consumption hasn't changed so I might ge a chance to crack on with the tank build
