Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

My car had been off the road (don't tell Mr Hogan) foe well over a year and had I wanted to renew the NCT I would have had to pay for a full year and then do the same thing five months after!
VRT, another scam! I have a UK-registered 12-year-old car which has very little in the way of resale value but they are still going to charge me €460 to register it here!
I really don't think I could get that much for it if I tried to sell it (which I couldn't as it still has UK registration!).
I'm told (but have no confirmation of this) that Ireland is the only country in Europe to make this registration charge.
Oh well, it was my choice, so I suppose I'm stuck with it!!!
Again, a disclaimer...these are my personal views and are absolutely not Forum Policy views - just something I feel quite strongly about.

VRT.....it is illegal to charge VRT (and ROI has been told by the EU about it).
NCT.....a scam full of stupid paper-work. There should be no need to bring along ID as to how "you" are as it is the car being "tested".
I am all for an annual car-test (I grew up with that since I was 17 years old) to test it for road-worthyness, but the NCT "paper-work procedures" are just stupid.
Car Tax.....Road Fund Tax and not a tax on owning a car. If it is not used, then it need not need Road Tax and why have to go through another load of silly paper-work to say it is not used (that is why we have cops on the road to check on car tax).
As for it being money for roads etc.....crap.
We even see that that supposed House Tax was to go on roads.....we live in an area that had the highest percentage of House Tax collected: and for anyone who has ever driven their car towards Dun Loaghaire through Sallynogging and down the hill to the sea, you'll know that the road will wreck your bushes (and hence render your car a NCT fail !!!.....more money taken off you.....aaagh....but you may have to take your car off the road....and end up with a 3000 euro fine because your Housing Tax was not spent properly by a scamming local council).

They implement those which bring in extra revenue - blaming Europe for the 'unpopular' ones (ie taking money and liberties from us), but should Brussels ever instigate a 'popular' law (hardly very likely) this crowd would try to get as much personal kudos as possible from it.
The people of Egypt have the right idea, we should possibly take a leaf out of their book...

Its a fecking joke, I had to sell my car only 6 months ago, The tax on a car now costing 700+ for a decent motor, and then you get hit with Insurance hikes on top!! And gas prices shooting up! I had to sell, and now ive got a bus pass and a good few taxi receipts! But still works out a lot cheaper.
VRT again..Joke. an extra way for our so called leaders to collect more cash so they can fund there brand new 132 reg cars! All Audi A6's Btw...

I don't even think that a cop car should use the Bus lanes unless on call duty....let alone having a cop chauffer CD-labelled cars using tax-payers money.
I have heard reports that the events in Egypt, Turkey and Brazil are "the worst demonstrations in x-years".
Rubbish......they are best demonstrations in years.

In the light of transparency these Days, how the hell does the Gov't get away with VRT? Europe is watching very closely, we are being forced, by Europe, to do things differently but choose not to chastise Ireland for breaking a different rule!
H.
As a footnote, I heard on the radio this morning that Europe is rather vexed at the actions of 'illegal' turf cutters on designated bogs.
Funny that - I bet the powers-that-be take notice of their masters on this issue - there are threats of fines reaching into the millions every year it continues!
Wake up Brussels - threaten similar fines if the less-than-approved VRT continues!
John
As a disclaimer the Law against turf cutting here is passed - for better or for worse, that's not for me to decide but as I understand it is the VRT equally illegal?
