Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Unfortunately Insurance companies have a captive market - not only here, it's the same in the UK (although perhaps a tiny bit less so there).

I long since concluded that there is nothing we can do but 'grin and bear it'. They have us by the 'short and curlies' to use an old unsavoury quote.

I have found, though, that if you shop around for the best quote (Companies will often give you a beneficial 'opening' quote) then take this to your existing insurer they will miraculously match, or even slightly 'better' it (not but very much though).

In the words of yet another old saying:
"If things don't get any better they'll stay as they are - and if they stay as they are Lord help us!".

Had the same issue they tried to increase the price of my insurance frome 350 to 570 without me having any accidents. When I rang them they tried to justify it, I just told the guy to stick the quote in his derriere and rang a broker and im now paying 330 fuly comprehensive.
I did the same with my bank and with my internet provider.
If you are not happy with the service or the price just go to a different company and hopefully more people will do the same and the prices will come down more.
Never forget you are the one paying their salaries and you are giving them a favor by giving them your money it is not the other way around !

Got it down from €450 to €350 with the same company they said its some new government thing
They also gave me life protection and covered my bike gear for another 1500 if I fall off the bike they also covered me for up to €20,000
If I fall off and am out of work lol I am afraid to drive now incase I fall off.

One time, if you stayed with an insurance co they would give you a loyalty discount. Now they seem to penalise you for being 'loyal'. The name of the game is to shop around, the deals are out there but you really have to look for them

I got that "new government thing" aswell when I rang them up to ask them why my premium had gone up by 25 euro even though I was into another year claims free......She rattled on for about 3 minutes about this and from what I gathered she's said that if it wasn't for some kind of Levy that the Government put on them my Premium would of being less.......Hmmmmm who do yeh trust?......Personally I don't trust both of them, but I will say that I changed my Motorbike to a bike with a bigger engine size not too long ago and when I rang them to change the policy expecting to be hit with a 60-100 euro jump, the guy told me that as i'm a 'valued' customer the price is staying the same(still not over the shock ha).......STILL don't trust them though!!!!

I think with both cars and motorbikes they just add 100 or 150 and chance there luck
If its not challenged they get more money and when it is you just get the same price insurance
I am nearly 21 year driving bikes all year round and the price has always been around 300 with no claims
If they were any good it would come down in price
