Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I would be spending around 300 to 400 euro.I need to get the best compact camera i can for that money.Five shops have said to go for more zoom and less megapixels.I am finding this just as hard as picking fish for my tanks. So if there is any more advice out there please let me know and thanks to all for the help and advice.

Orca what do you want this camera for?
Dose it have to be a compact?
Would you spend an extra few quid and go for a DSLR?

The camera would have to be compact as i drive a motorbike and do a bit of touring. All i would need is a compact camera that would take the best quality of picture that i could get for the money i have.A good out of the pocket camera with quick start up time and could take shot after shot with no big delay.I would also need it for quality close up shots. It might be a lot i am looking for in a compact camera but any thoughts would be great.

Hi -for a compact, I would go for the PANASONIC Lumix DMC-TZ5 ; it has a 10 optical zoom and a Leica lens. We have had the FZ20 for a few years and it takes very nice pictures with a x12 zoom. My only problem with a compact or a bridge camera, is the delay between pressing the button and taking the picture ... if it's a fish or a jumping horse, you might just get it but it's not guaranteed ! :-) However, distant stuff or macro shots come out really nice. My letter to Santa might just include a DSLR for that reason ! :-D

Hope this helps.

Valerie that lumix dmc-tz5 looks great and from the reviews i have read in the last hour put it down as one of the best compact cameras out there and for the price you get a lot.I think the search might be over and time spend some money.
Thanks for the help.

Orca, don't forget to get a good size memory card (great deals on amazon & ebay) and ensure the transfer tom PC methoed is easy, like a direct USB. Andrew

I have heard good things about this camera, mainly as a compact street camera that pros or semi pros like as a pocket camera. The most important question is what will it be used for most of the time, if the answer is photographing fish, it may not be the camera for you.

Macro photography with a compact can be tricky. There are some good example macro shots on flickr.com. See:

www.flickr.com/search/?ss=2&ct=6&w=all&q...DMC-LX3+Macro&m=text

I had a scan of the review you linked but did not notice closest focusing distance, that would be important for fish.

All my photography gear is Canon, but there are other makes just as good, the choice is yours. Suggest you go shopping to a real camera shop, tell them exactly what you want to use it for and get some advice.

I have only skipped through this thread and not read much(due to time).
I would not buy Sony.I was once a Sony fan,but not any more.I bought a Canon Ixus 90is 4 days before Xmas,it is brilliant. It also has a dedicated 'Aquarium' and 'Dive' modes.I paid 130pnds in Currys Newry, they had it here at the time for 200e,a week later in the Xmas sales it was 'on special' for 300e IN THE SAME SHOP!!!!!!A leading Dublin camera shop had it for 280.I dont know what it is now.
I have a DSLR(Canon again),but find them to be a pain when on holiday or travelling, and usualy leave it at home.
Try and get one which is sdhc compatible,I got a good 16gb sdhc card for mine for about 30e,unfortunately that shop has closed(Max Burns)
I buy my cards at www.7dayshop.com And would NEVER buy one at a Camera shop, simply due to prices.
My 2 cents worth.

always on the lookout for interesting corys.pm me if you know off any!

Hi Daragh,
The closest focusing distance in macro mode is about 1 centimeter.

That would be close enough!!

Still not sure that this is the best camera for fish photography in that price range. Excellent for all around stuff but I think you could do better with a differnt model. This camera is particularly good for wide angle ability, typically lacking in point and shoots, but that is no use for fish photography at all.

The Ixus Acara mentioned is a good option, I have one and find it ok, still think talking to a camera shop is a good idea.

hi

disclaimer....
while i cant take a decent photo to save my life!

i have a compact pentax and it has a great feature
which is manual focusing, where you set the distance you are from the
object you are photgraphing, this means i can get reallt good macros
it has macro settings, but the manual is more precise again
perhaps all camera have this, im not sure, i just found it good

make sure it has a shutter timer or remote control

you can buy a cheap but adequate tripod in Euro2 for
(you guessed it) 2euro

regards
