Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I must get back into it, I did it for a few years growing up,logged a heck of alot of dives in a short space of time and worked my way up the ladder as they say.Worked in a dive centre for 5 years while going to college and all that, miss it still but should really get back into some time. Id imagine the wrecks down there are pretty nice, you ever do much diving off the west cork coast ?
Red Sea is gorgeous diving, Ive done the red sea and its fab, make sure you bring the camera, some decent diving off mexico also, particularly the cave diving out there although its abit risky!

Ya i know the feeling i got my cert when i was a kid but PADI is big cash for dives. Doing about 2 dives a month now and its fast becoming a get out of ireland card if needs be.

Never been down that way but done alot of wrecks along the east coast, be lucky if ya get 2 mt of vis on a good day.

I think that was the cam I was looking at last year, double strobe.SOO much cheaper in the states.
Willie is at Oceandivers in Dun Laoighre(never get that spelling right),sound lad.
Did most of my courses with the Grays at Killary, highly recomend the Surface supplied hard hat specialty,it IS a PADI specialty,as far as I know 2 people in the World have it,me and my buddyB)
We are hoping to do the U260 off West Cork this year, anyone done it?

True on the viz front, but I'll tell you what, its the best form of training in that kinda muck and dirt! I did all my training right up to OWSI in Ireland, had to go to Blackpool in England and Stoney cove for my instructor qualification. But once you are out in the Red Sea and other places, its simple dives, get your deco's right and your laughing, no seaweed or choppy waves to be dealing with!!! Gesh the thought of it has me drooling for a holiday there! The money is madness alright for the dives though esp if your renting the gear out too.

Acara,I've done the U260 a few times, its just off Glandore, the periscope is still up and the torpedo shells are also there.I think its around the 46m mark, if your into Nitrox Id go for that as your bottom time will be limited. Great dive,if your down that way get the Kowloon Bridge in also, the biggest European wrecksite, would be an ideal build up dive.(watch the currents!).

It would be a special dive to notch up,but know what you mean about the depth, most life is above 15mtrs anyways.Only Irish wrecks I've done were the Julia T at Killary, and a WW1 and a WW2 wreck off Rathlin Is,Glengarry(I think)and the HMS ??,will have to look up log, brains gone.
The Zenobia is great for penetration if your in Cyprus, and the Mikhail Lermontov in NZ are 2 nice ones.
Don't dive near as much as we'd like,as you said,it aint cheap, even owning all our kit.Paid 50euro for 1 boat dive off Dalkey last year, thats using our own kit.
