Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

selling was created by derek (Derek Doyle)
11 of 15 posts on the home page are people selling stuff. it's becoming more like buy and sell.
i have no objection to this in principle but these selling posts need to be put in a seperate section.

must agree with derek, is it the R word or does it seem everyone is getting out of fishkeeping with the amount of stuff on sale here... it'd be a shame for so many to leave the hobby

Id be intersted to know how much it does actually cost to run a tank. Of course size and equipment (wattage etc) determines alot of it.

Part of the hobby is the moving on of your unwanted items, its a bustling area of the fraternity.
People get bored of keeping one thing, or have to downsize in financially difficult times, or just get bored.
The buy and sell section is where you go for this stuff.
Personally I never even look at the homepage, so if there is a heap of adds where recent posts would be listed, perhaps you have to ask why is no-one on this forum posting?

Hy Alan,
posted exact what you wrote maby 2 weeks ago.A lot people holding back:( :cheer: ;) .If you count the members of the two forums together you think we have a lot fishkeepers around-half it because the same people are involved on the two forums. So sadly dont expect toooo much of activity.Regards,Tim

Think back to why there are two forums, and I would personally prefer to keep it that way.

If you have two boring forums going at the one time that does not mean if you get all the people on one that it would be any more intresting.............................B)

there is no story. long or otherwise.
a few of the lads set up a new forum for the lfks and thats it. we are all fishkeepers and are still on good terms.
i for one never saw any problem with having another forum and friendly rivalry.
end of story...

As Derek was outlining in an earlier post ...

Once upon a time, there was 1 club in Dublin and 1 discussion forum.

Now, there are 2 clubs in Dublin and 2 discussion forums ...

Alkiely, you seem to ask the same question on many different threads on both sites. Why the obsession?

There is no big juicy story to be found. In the UK there are probably hundreds of societies crammed into very small districts. It's human nature for people to want to start seperate societies and forums.

For me, I love going from one to another when i'm online. Plenty of knowledge to tap into on both.

Back on-topic, it's true that there are many "For Sale" threads but unfortunetely that's just the way the hobby is heading. I think it's something that we'll have to put up with for a while anyway.

It’s great that nearly everybody is of the same opinion. Variety is the spice of life and we need to see how others do it as well. (Look on other Forums that is.)

When there is an interesting topic it seems to be gone in a very short time, and the people you expect to add to it never seem too.

Every Forum goes through good and bad spells and at the moment things just seem to be on the slow side.

This is just a thought if everybody on the Forum tried to start a Thread say once a month on something they have an interest in, it might just help get the forum up and running again.
