Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi All,

I'm working on a Research Masters in Information Technology this year.

The main deliverable is a Thesis, which basically involves picking a subject, researching what has been done before & then bettering/proving something with the aid of computer analysis.

Ideally it should be a subject that you're really interested in.

I was going to focus on sophisticated pattern matching technology that I'm familiar with through work I've done in the past but given that it'll take me a year of research in my own time, it'd be nice to do something more interesting for me & if I can do something around fish/fish keeping that would be great.

The IT aspect will involve me creating software to improve/analyse/prove something.
So I'll need a subject to research, problem to solve/prove/improve & before and after data for analysis purposes.

This is where you lot come in, I need some ideas.. I'd really appreciate if you could post any thoughts/ideas you have for discussion. Can you think of any software that would be useful? Any source of data that could be mined & made sense of etc?

Doesn’t matter how basic/complex the idea is as your idea may inspire other ideas.

Thanks in advance,
Patrick

heres a few basic ideas that might be worth considering.
a breakdown on trends and patterns in fishkeeping such as the rise and fall in popularity of different species. a program to assist in predicting trends would be a valuable marketing tool.

the hybridisation of species. which species are more prone to this, size of tank, tankmates, commercial and
deliberate hybridisation etc.

colour feeding with sex changing hormones.

30 tanks specialise in african cichlids, angelfish and various catfish

Patrick,

This is something I’ve been trying to do for the I.T.F.S., they have Fish Shows every few years and it’s a lot of paper work involved and a lot of duplication. This is part of what I've done so far.

1. Size Book.

CLASS 'B' SIZE SHEET
Where two sizes are given the first refers to the Male and the second the Female
SIZE
Barbus ablabes 85
Barbus aboinensis 80
Barbus annectens 70

2. Fish Classes

TANK No. FISH NAME OWENERS NAME ENTRY No.
1 ODESSA BARB ASD 21

3. Judging Sheet
CHAMPIONSHIP CLASS SINGLE FISH
SIZE 10
BODY 20
COLOUR 20
FINS 20
CONDITIONS & DEPORTMENT 20
PRESENTATION 10
100

4. Show Entries
SHOW ENTRIES
FISH NAME PERSONS NAME ENTRY No.
1 Barbus ablabes Joe Bloggs 1
2 Barbus irish Joe Bloggs 1

5. Place Certificates.

Patrick, you would be a very popular man if you came up with software like what Tom mentioned for show secretaries. It would even have minor commercial possibilities with sales you all the UK clubs too.

Connection to label printing and a live database like fishbase.org would be essential to ensure it stayed up to date etc.

Sounds like an interesting year ahead for you, let's know whatever project you take on and how it goes.

Thanks guys - they sound like great ideas.
I think I'll definitely be able to make a masters out of this alright.

I'm going to bash around some ideas & will post some updates.

Thanks again,
Patrick
