Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I am looking to get a fly rod for next year.I have looked at the greys x flite, hardy demon, sharps gordon 2 all in a 9'6 #7.I have found that there are so many sites and reviews on fly rods and need to find out what rods people are using and hear there thoughts.
So if anyone out there can help.

Hi Orca,

I'm very much a novice fly fisherman but I do know that a fly rod is a far more personal choice than, say a spinning rod or float rod.

If you can manage to go to some of the schools about and ry before you buy, then ignore the reviews (unless there are build quality issues etc) and just buy what feels best and suits your style. My first rod was a lovely piece of kit, but just not very forgiving, and not a great choice for a novice. I went for casting lessons and eventually got used to it but if I went to the instructor before I splashed my cash he could have set me up with a suitable kit.

Also, the line is another big can of worms and make sure to get the right one for your style and ability.

Of course, if your an experienced fly fisherman, you'll already know all this.

BTW, I bought a rod made by Loop and I really love it now I have the hang of it. I can't remember which model but it was a pretty basic one. Check them out at www.looptackle.com

I use a 9.5 foot 7 weight Vision which is not a bad rod, a pal of mine recently bought a Greys rod though (not sure of model) & it is something else.

When I do need to replace the vision I'll definitely be looking to Greys.
(These are made by Hardy)

Southside Angling in Dublin city centre always have a great selection of rods if you want to have a 'feel' of a few & there will be two big angling shows in Dublin early next year where you'll be able to pick up a bargain if you can wait

Fly fishing is very enjoyable alright, I used to do a lot of fishing but havent done so much in recent years as I've been doing a Masters & have a young child. (Another child on the way next year means even less fishing too)

There is an Angling show every year in the national show centre in Swords, usually around mid Feb. I believe the other one this year is going to be in Citywest in Tallaght, haven't heard much about it though.

Just thinking about fly fishing - I bought a beautiful fly reel a few years ago. A 'Hardy Angel', really expensive but a gorgeous piece of machinery.
The reel I had been using cost 16 Euro & was seriously bashed so I decided that once it met it's demise I'd start using the hardy.
Just the other day rooting in the attic I came across the hardy reel, still new & perfect in it's box! The 16 Euro reel is still going strong, covered in dirt & bashed beyond belief but working fine

I will have to find out when the shows are on and you never know i might get a good deal on a rod.
Is there any chance you could find out what rod your friend bought as i am looking at getting a greys x flite and it would be good to hear what he thinks of his rod.Roll on march 17th so the fishing can start:) :) :)

It is a greys Greyflex rod - I'd highly recommend it though I havent used any other greys rods. Their gear is usually top notch so I don't think you could go far wrong with any of them once you get the length & weight you want.

P.s think the Swords show is the 17th or 18th Feb 2010. It's advertised in Irish Angler
