Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

To Fry or not to Fry.....

Just noticed something to the right of the screen.

It's says 'Fry' against some of us on here.

I'm confused...
...does that mean that we are an unspecified fish fry? a baccalaureate in want of absorbing our egg sacs and eventually turning into a Mola mola?

or

does it mean that something in our profiles makes us look good enough  to have fried in a pan and then dashed with a hint of lemon?

On my sole will you; I'm sure people's haddock enough of that in this plaice?B)

Come-on forum.......be less ambiguous, and leave our sole alone.

Not sure if I quite got the jist of your question but its 03.30 in the morning and the lads on the early shift drank all the coffee. The eyes kinda glazed over at Mola mola. Do you mean is the "ranking system" nesessary? I suppose when I first joined here I used to take solice in the fact that someone with a lot of posts to their name probably knew what they were talking about. That said, there are many people here with not so many posts that clearly know their stuff, yourself included here Ian. I suppose if people take much stock in the system, it could be open to abuse, like stat padding in gaming but you can always tell pretty quickly those who are on the level and those that are not. This kind of system is employed on nearly all the fish forums that I visit and I suppose it does keep people posting. Ive seen people getting pulled by admins for posting for the sake of posting on other sites so I guess once you have good admins, the system can be a good feature. I hope I havnt missed the point of your post here after that long rant but I wouldnt be suprised. Gotta be coffee around here somewhere...

Jay,
I hope you located some coffee...

We have had an amount of the very people you mention, but mostly those sorts of 'post-to-get-your-numbers-up' people don't appear on this Forum too often (thankfully).

Goodness, not a jab at the ranking system.......maybe more of a bit of early morning fun OR maybe to get a fun analysis of the different Fish Types that are 'ranked' against people.

Should we not have had a few “Frog Fish”, “Trout”, “Pike”, or “Kippers” (who knows who is smoked-out here). B)

On post numbers, is there a ranking status of “Cod” ? for those who speak a load of cod.

I’m also sure ‘Flounder’ would be a good status to have.
I wouldn’t have floundered about giving that as a ranking.

The ranking is maybe rather unfair on the species of fish…..almost prejudicial against some fine species.

What fish are in the rankings?

Maybe we could analyse them species here (as a bit of fun of course). A little bit like a horoscope based upon the fish.

Still, I’m not sure what species of fry I am yet.

On a more serious side, I am not actually a fan of 'rankings' on forums.....but I'm not complaining.

Rating, I think the more you post the more of a "social fish" you become?

LMAO @ stat padding on a forum. This is true (Sad) though I will say bad and good advice comes from all coners no matter how many posts.

If you all ask yourself "how many posts have I got now?" often? If yes then you may be one of those individuals.
:)

Then there are some who like the sound of their own text :0

What's the highest fish species? is that one a nice "social type".....like, say, a snakehead?
Don't knock snakehead's sociability......they love to have visitors to their humble home.! Ask any snakehead.
