Tired of Fish-keeping?
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Good question Kev! I've kept fish pretty much constantly since I was 7 years old (still know nothing!). I've never given this much thought before but nothing has ever made me want to give up fishkeeping.

at one stage i nearly gave it up bye feeling its just a never ending cycle of spending money on things new filters new heaters and especially marines very straining on the wallet at the best of times
oh and what took me back from the edge was the little joys and satisfaction of doing a water change cleaning the glass and having every thing tip top sitting down lighting up a owl john player blue and watching my fishy friends swim around there spotless tank
at the end of the day it becomes nite

Many times felt like it and have done it a few times.
I've gone through stages of deciding to change focus...eg in the 70s was into Marines, gave them up for the 80s and stayed away; and my focus is now off tanganyikans.
I moved to Ireland 11 years ago, and had to leave every tank behind.....some of the fish were easy to rid myself of, but large arowanas and a massive electric catfish (basically a 3 foot pig in tank with gills !) were more difficult to give away.
Even the reptiles and tarantulas had to go.
So I had a break of a year ot two without fish. Very difficult to start again after having a nice set-up.
At the moment though, I'm doing more herpetology than fish-keeping. But.....re-focusing every so often keeps ya young, fit and....well....young.

For about 2 hours when I lost 4 of the most beautiful rams Ive ever seen! It was a simple stupid water change mistake from me when I didnt have the temperatures matching (was during the cold spell) and I was rightly gutted after it. Literally dead in an hour after the water change. I was gutted to say the least and thought Im giving up!! But then I saw a few L144 fry (albeit mix with ancistrius)zip past the glass and I thought, they seem happy enough with the tank!! I managed to pick up 5 more amazing rams the following week thanks to a very good petshop owner who I emailed straight away to keep the last of them for me!!
Glad to know all are still flying it!
I only ever think of giving up the hobby when I do a stupid error and just question the hobby then for myself!!!
The ESB bill doesnt help but we are all in the same boat there!

Nothing like walking into a wet living room to make you think twice about this hobby

Gavin, yep them moments have come to mind as well.
At one time, in the 1980s, we were hit by a large earth tremor (in the UK BTW)that split the back wall away from the house (an old 4-storey building). So, we had to have scaffolding inside the house to hold the upper walls and ceiling.
So that had put a strain on my fishkeeping, but the house was very weak after that.
Anyway, One day, I was feeding my favourite Discus fish (about 15 years old.....a monster sized Blue....would kill any other discus that went in etc etc), when a lorry past the house and the whole house shook quite violently.
I had the glass lid lifted for feeding ..... but in the violent shake, the fish bolted upwards and out of the water (and a full sized Discus is a heavy weight) as I lost grip on the lid. His head smashed into the lid out of water. Brain damage and very very sad loss.
We looked at our electric bill at the time (500 sterling each one), the solidity of the house with some big tanks in it, and a dead favourite.
Give up fish-keeping?
