Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

So lately I had been thinking about getting into reptiles and after seeing some of the pics posted by Pete and Ian I was certain it was something I wanted to try my hand at. A great opportunity presented itself this weekend and I couldnt pass it up. So here she is, my new Leopard Gecko. Big thank you to John for sourcing this one for me.

Lol, she seems to like the warm end of the keyboard for sure. She was already tame when I got her so she is no work at all. Easy to care for and feed so a great reptile for a newbie. Hoping to find a male for her soon.

I wouldn't advsie this, certainly not once a week. Too much fat content which causes problems with their liver long term. with reptiles it's best to take your cues from a wild diet. They would never eat mouse pinks in the wild ergo..it's a no no.They are insectivores and a good gut loaded insect diet should be reflected in captivity.also calcium on every third feed and you should have a long lived little critter.

@ Gavin,

Thanks for the reply. I was going to gut load the crickets with potato and apple slices, is this ok? Also, I got the calcium powder with her and what I do is throw some powder on a few crickets or mealworms and shake them around so it coats their bodies, but, Ive read that there should be a constant supply of calcium on hand at all times, like in a bowl and the Gecko will take it as it is required. Is that true or is just coating the insects every few feeds enough? Cheers.

@ funkychick,

Yeah these are not hard work at all. No need for special UV bulbs or anything as they are nocturnal. A great reptile for beginners.

every third feed with the insects is needed just to insure that is getting into their system, putting it on every feed gives them no choice in the ammount, and yup it's a good idea to leave a small amount out in a dish(I use the top off a plastic water bottle) so they can lick at it sgould they need it. The best suppliment is a thing called nutrobal. Any reptile shop worth it's salt should stock it. as for the gut loading you can use a bunch of items, the ones with the higher calcium to phos ratios are better here's a list I did up a while ago for feeder insects and herbivores. Varying it anong the higher ones gives you an all round gut load. Hope this helps.
