Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

So how come there is a click here? was created by Georgia (Georgia)
Well I have noticed after reading through the site that there is a big click. I only noticed until the few times I tried to talk and I was shut up pretty quickly.
I wonder if it is an age issue on my part? Maybe it because I am female and better yet I am white.
Who knows but I think I will leave this site rest as there are very few nice people here. I have met one or two but the rest seem to think it is okay to harass other members.

I just do not need the stress from this site. So good bye.

.....

Try not to take things to personally on the net... sarcasm and humor doesn't always come out right when typed.
I noticed you were warned in one thread... That was just forum policy, nothing personal (i didn't even know that myself).

I wonder if it is an age issue on my part? Maybe it because I am female and better yet I am white.

This is a fish forum.... If ya wanna talk about fish it doesn't matter what you are. Social and rubbish section is a different story... Age, gender and race is always going to effect a conversation, Diff views, likes, humor ect ect.... example If a bunch of lads are talking about football and somebody calls the goal keeper sexy they will prob be 'shut up pretty quickly.'

Anyways iv no idea what was said to you but i gotta say generally 'the rest (don't) seem to think it is okay to harass other members.'

Stick around and ya might see we are actually a nice bunch, This site is great for advice from experienced fish keepers. The guys here have helped me a lot so far.... Just use it for info ;) !!!

Georgia,
You will meet idiots in every part of your life and one of the problems with public forums is that it seems to attract all kinds of idiots. Dont let them get to you.

Ya I was warned but I do not particularly care on that issue although it seems a little fruitless as I am a 4hr bus ride to a "sponsor" and a €40 ticket away. Why should I pay €40 extra when I can get it cheaper and faster from another supplier.

Err okay gotta say if I am looking at a goalie I would be seeing if the guy can keep a ball out or if he is a good shot when it comes to kicking half way across a field. I am a big girl and was a goalie for a while.

I have been beaten half to death before and I do not see why I should take smart ass remarks for pricks on here. I get a better response from a much larger forum. Which you would think would have much more issues with flaming. The administrators can do a fair more and I do not say that lightly as I have been co admin for a forum with 300 active members and over 1000 sub active members and that is not accounting for duel IP's

I have just noticed a refined click of people on this forum who think it is okay to harass people and I am sickened to see the cruelty unleashed on people. Dramatic you may think my words but I am a poet.

:S Is all this because of one individual....? If something really bad was said just PM an administrator.

Size doesn't matter.. I don't know of any other large Irish forums, People on this forum do help each other out... Sure i got free plants when i first joined. Iv sold and swapped fish and so far this forum has been great.

anyways if this was because of a stupid remark its not fair to blame the forum and compare it to larger (Probably American) forums... I dont know many people who keep fish my age (20) and younger . Its very expensive and i dont think its all that popular (Most of us are all broke, Im making my own fish food at the moment:laugh: )... around 2 mates hav a goldfish in a bowl, one kept a betta but it died after a week.

Smart ass remarks...mabey. Harassment and cruelty...dramatic to say the least. If some person or group is "stressing" you out, then report them. Simple as. Consider sticking around, there are good folks here.

just re looking at this, and am finding it over dramatic in the extreme, admins like johnh and the guys dont tolerate bullying on this forum and actively seek to stamp it out, not saying you dont feel it happened to you but with 40 posts in 8 months on this forum i seriously dont think you gave this forum a good enough chance, i'm a member a few years now and bar one or two idiots who are now gone from the forum, there is a decent lot here who help each other out all the time, so therefore and this is my opinion only i cannot take seriously these claims from someone who obviously dosent try to contribute to this forum and then claims harassment, bullying.... i'm all for helping people on here if i can as is everyone else, so again in my opinion if you want to go, then go, if you want to stay then stay but after reading these posts you feel like you where told to shut up in i would class them as differences of opinions and feel you took them up wrong.. again i say we dont like bullying harassment and behaviour like that here i am glad to say and the mods and admins whilst they cant catch everything are very good at policing the site to stop any occurances of this behaviour... as far as i'm concerned being an active member on numerous forums this is one of the best and friendliest if you just came to club meetings or the shows they put on you'd find out how good they are here.. yes there may always be one or two people you may not like but such is life dont paint all with one brush.. ok my defence of this site over with... mods and admins if you feel i've gone overboard pls delete but i love this site for the friends i've made on it and the people i've met from it and the knowledge i've got from it and this is my opinion only

Sheag35 has perfectly put into words my sentiments. There are no cliques on this forum, sure there are a couple of small groups who are extra familiar with eachother but that's about it, and I don't think there is anything wrong with that.
As many of the lads on here will know I have criticised some goings-on here before but these days I think the "banter to seriousness" ratio is just right.

To be honest with you Georgia, I have read a lot of your posts in the past and I found many of them hard to follow and vague. I often couldn't tell if you were making a statment or asking a question. This made me lose interest in the threads you started and be reluctant to contribute any of my opinions or experience to them. The thread about the air pump (before you deleted it for some strange reason) and the one about the lid for your fish tank are two examples of this.
Do you think that this might be a factor in what you percieved as a clique or reluctance of other members to converse with you?

I do hope you continue to use this forum, make friends, and benefit from it as I and so many others (including some other white females  ) have done, but at the end of the day the forum is what you make it and if you dont like it maybe it just isn't for you.

Can only echo the comments from Sheag,Viper etc on this front,Georgia its not often I see you contributing to the forum and I hope its not because you are being pressurised by others or feeling singled out,so I hope you havent made an assessment on the 40 or so posts you have put in to date.If there is any bullying going on,you need to ensure it is reported and dealt with. There is no room for bullying anywhere in todays world,be it online or elsewhere.

As for the clicks that you mention. Some of the people on the forum know each other personally on here, and others are on here more often and get to know the names etc.... Im sure its nothing to do with age or colour or anything else. Im surprised you've even mentioned age and colour. Its an online forum, age and colour are unknown from peoples posts,so I find this rather surprising that you are trying to lay the blame on factors like that.

I hope you give the site another go,its there for people who are new to the hobby, who are experienced in the hobby and anyone in between. I dont think anyone here on the forum can say they havent had a helping hand from their fellow fish keepers. Georgia, stick with the forum for another bit and give it another go.Hopefully your opinion of it will differ. I know Id be lost without it.

Gavin
