Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

My mate had a powercut in his discus tank, including a motoro ray.It was 2-3mths ago in the middle of winter and lasted nearly 24hrs.He wrapped tank in kitchen foil and a duvet, used a battery powered air-pump,and I think a warm water bottle.Temp never went below 24deg.
Not sure about insurance,if you ask about it,they may include it,but you know insurance in this country, you'll pay for it!(my last car ins bill back home in NZ was for 3rd party fire and theft,24yr old driver,1 year,65 euro!AND its not compulsory)

always on the lookout for interesting corys.pm me if you know off any!

Dont think you can get insurance on your fish here or in the UK. Although I think there maybe a policy for high end Koi in the UK.

Most home contents policies will cover the cost of damage casued by a burst or leaking tank (provided it is not leaking over a long period) but WILL NOT cover the cost of repairing or replacing the tank itself.

I had a power cut today for about two hours...the tank is cycling so it wasn't really an issue but thankfully on hand was a 2 stroke generator that was bought in Aldi recently just for this very reason!!

So get a generator...saves you insurance on your fish and the death of your fish!! :)

They drowned out the noise of my motorcycle engine!! Granted its a 125cc so really isn't too loud. They produce alot of smoke initially but sure its 2 stroke so thats expected. They're pretty good...not great at supplying electricity to the tank initially but when it warms up its great...warming up only takes about 5 minutes. Also it helps if you only plug in what is necessary to reduce the demand on the engine.

For 89.99 ya cant go wrong...trust me...its nice to know that it will run for 10 hours on a gallon of fuel.

Switch off your lights because the engine tends to slow from time to time causing the lights to flicker...maybe not great on them thats all.

If your afraid of power blackouts, buy yourself a generator, I bought a 1000W petrol generator before xmas, only about 120 quid, DID or something I think.

Havent had to use it yet, but its always good to have. Especially if you have delicate systems, most fish will last several hours in a black out, its only if you have discus, high density tanks, or inverts your in trouble. Best investment I've made in a long time.
