Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

It's that time again...

Here are the ten entries for your consideration. We'll go with the 1-2-3 format so please send in your vote in that order - no.1 being your favoured one (which will get three points) and so on for the other two.
One vote (of three places) for each Forum member.
Please send your votes, as ever, to
This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
And PLEASE add your Forum user-name.
I am truly sorry, but something is amiss with the 'Competitions' section and the post with the Rules has become extinct.
For the moment it should suffice to say that no competitor may vote for his/her own entry.

We'll keep the voting time open until midnight Wednesday August 6.

Here are all ten entries (identification number above each picture).

Entry 1:

Entry 2:

Entry 3:

Entry 4:

Entry 5:

Entry 6:

Entry 7:

Entry 8:

Entry 9:

Entry 10:

OK so - over to you all for your votes.

Well folks, speaking about Round 2 - it was hardly a resounding success with ten entries and only nine people voting but anyway here - such as they are - are the results for this round.
A clear winner is entry #5 - so congratulations go to Inza for his lovely depiction of a Red Male Betta.
Please contact Home Aquariums, Galway, to redeem your prize voucher.
#3 was second, #4 was third and #6 came fourth, with only three votes between second and fourth places.
Sorry I can't put names to these placings, as the wonderful googlemail has managed to lose my folder containing the July entries.
Perhaps if anyone would like to know they can ask here and the 'culprits', if they so choose, can lay claim to their entry numbers.
So, again, well done Inza.

Please entry #3, once you get there, flood the forum with pictures !!!

I get into the competition to make it more alive, not to win really :)
So yep, congrats to all and remember to submit your shots for this month prizes !!!

Thanks again, Inza.

I love that tank. I'm kind of tired of trying planted tanks and if I was doing an Amazon tank or similar, I'd do it like that. Sand, roots and lots of fish. Very cool.

Yes this got my no1 vote, amazing looking tank. That or those pieces of wood must of set you back a bit! I'm tired of seeing too much green in my tanks too!

First of all congratulations to Inza: amazing picture and well deserved win.
Now as a general comments to viewers, voters and participants: I feel the success and appeal of the forum is greatly based on the participation of the members: John has to organise, post so many messages and do the "back-office" work to animate these competitions: I find it disrespectful that forum members who viewed the thread, and benefit from all the knowledge and advice dispensed in the forum would not spend one minute to send an email and vote or submit an entry. I am sure John would appreciate more dealing with 30/50 votes than 9 even if more work is involved.
A chain is as strong as its weakest link, and this forum will be as good and interesting as its members allow it to be.

On that note, go work on your entry for round 3! :hammer:

voting buttons on the topic?

Unfortunately the options for using the voting facility only stretch to three so it wouldn't be possible to give votes for more than this. Even ten entries would be too many, I'm afraid, but your suggestion is still welcomed as being a positive suggestion.

Inza, that is a really nice gesture you have made.
I have heard from the contestant who submitted entry #3 and he has said that it would be most unfair for him to accept a family ticket - since he is only a single person so he has stepped aside in favour of someone who would be better placed to make use of the generous offer from Atlantaquaria - in other words a family person.

So - as Paddyc1 was next in the list the prize offer is passed on to him.

How about it Paddy, fancy a trip to Galway at some point in the future?

I would feel guilty taking the prize as it was not my pic that won the competition......
I would gladly take the prize in default...but as I'm in Dublin and I've no childer , I would much rather see the prize go to to a family.
Can I suggest offering the prize to a childrens charity of some sort (Jack and Jill maybe) where it might really be appreciated.

This could be done by, or on behalf of Atlantaquaria and ITFS

Cheers Paddy - I'll run your suggestion past the Aquarium and see what the reaction is.
