Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

After burning the midnight oil all 14 votes have been assimilated and the first four in either section are as follows:

Discus -
1st - #4

2nd - #2

3rd - #3

4th - #1

Non-Discus -
1st - #06

2nd - #13

3rd - #12

4th - #09

So, congratulations go to Tetdiscus in the Discus category and to the person submitting #6 for being this month's winners.

Thanks again to Inza and Miamiheat for making the generous prize donations.
Tetdiscus, please contact Inza to redeem your reward for winning.
In the non-discus section the winner has decided to defer and so the two prizes of Miami's Angels and Inza's wood pass down the line for platty and Luger.205 to contact one another to decide who chooses which prize - the Angels or the wood, both very good prizes in my view.

In the light of the desultory interest shown - both in entries submitted and votes cast I think it's becoming very clear that these competitions aren't really of interest and so I think it's time - for now at least - to bring the curtain down on future ones. This seems an awful pity - especially for those who send in entries every round - we'll resurrect the competitions again at some point in the future, I'm sure (in all truth I actually enjoy running them).

Thanks to the members who have taken the trouble to enter and thanks, too, to those who took the time to vote...and thanks, yet again, to Inza and Miamiheat for donating the prizes.

I would not stop having comps due to number of entries, I usually enter but never have any hopes of winning as there are always much better entries so I understand if people are reluctant to enter and also it is tricky to take pictures of fish, they will not stay still and do not take direction at all.

The number of votes is disappointing.

Can anyone offer a reason for not voting? Perhaps good reasons that members are not voting.

Dec

Laziness it took me 40 seconds to vote. It's not hard to pick the photos you like and think should win. It's a Pity that they are ending.

A real shame. I enjoyed the comps. What ever the reason for not entering there should be no excuse for not voting as it takes less than a minute

I have a suspicion that - at least in the case of competitors - there is a reluctance to vote for fear they are voting themselves down.
While I can see this side of the coin I'll only say that this is how the competitions here have been run since time immemorial - well, long before I took over, anyhow. But, notwithstanding that theory, it's still enormously disheartening to only have 14 people take the time and trouble to vote (some of whom were competitors too).
If and when the Competitions resurface I can see a whole new regime for both entering and voting coming into being. This may improve the situation, or drive even more people away from participating (thinks...if there is only my entry in contention, I'm bound to win at least one round!).
Let's let the world take a couple of turns then we shall review the situation.

John, the competition is a great gig and I would definitely keep it alive.

But in fairness the biggest problem I see here is the fact that both submitting and voting is being done in very old-school fashion. Having to send everything to your email makes sense as it deals with anonymity, but it is not user friendly and it might (and probably does) put a good percentage of people off. I would expect the participation to skyrocket if the whole thing was built in the website / forum itself or even ran on Facebook completely.

If you want let me know I wouldn't actually mind looking at ways to custom-code a competition plugin and embed it into the website (if not the forum) so people could:
  • submit / upload anonymously
  • vote anonymously
... without the need to open the email client, type in the address, typing the message etc. Everything would be just a few clicks away - the way it is supposed to be in 2014.

I am talking free of charge of course.

That's good and all but not everyone is a member of Facebook. Personally I wouldn't be willing to set up an account for the sake of competitions but that's just me.

Facebook was just a sidekick idea Joe. The only proper solution is to make it embedded into the website as a separate subsystem so people can click to vote and also so submitted photos make it into the competition only if their authors vote.

There are 10 Angelfish i was giving away. PLEASE decide asap and come and collect: the buggers are growing like weed and overstocking my Discus tank. PM me to get my number and we can set a date/time for collection. If I dont hear from anyone in a couple of weeks I will move them on as I see fit.
Congrats to the winners.

In all fairness the voting system is fine as it is - at least it would be if people actually VOTED!!!

Facebook is definitely a non-starter - as is any automated system for submitting and adjudicating entries.

"Old school" is fine - or it would be - if people actually entered - and voted!

As mentioned earlier when the rounds resume there is going to be a shake-up which will either improve the situation entirely or see the whole thing fizzle out like a damp squib.

Watch this space.

Could the winners please contact the donors - especially Miami - with regard to collecting these prizes.
Miami was kind enough to donate these Angels as a prize, the least which could be done would be that he has them taken off his hands promptly.

Re Prize - Platty is passing it on and I don't have space for more than 5 of the Angels in my 100L.
So the wood is what I am after I guess (could "help" with 5 angels also if required :P ).

I think, then, that if you'll take five then we have five more Angels to offer to the fourth-placed entrant - who is Tetdiscus.
(Looks like you'll have two collections to be making, Tet).

Hi John,

I guess that is too much for what I bargained for....Because Im not sure about combining discus and angels in my tank. I'l get back to you soon.

But before anyone else say something about the discus photo I sent, here is a copy (some of it) of email I sent to a concern member: "The discus were under the bogwood, which I have taken off. And the fish was only about two weeks in my tank at the time. As I just thought they looked cute lining up, looking at me. But because I used my phone and the shadow of the wood, they looked different. No need to worry about their health as im on top of it all. They get feed 4x a day, with stendker beefheart as main food. 30% -40% a day water change going through the hma filter. I installed Deltec d-d 39 watts uv steriliser. Fluval FX 6 as filter. I have a separate 50 liter as a quarantine/hospital tank. And the fish are eating like theres no tomorrow. " ;)

Congrats to all the winners !!!

So guys i am very busy at work atm so my only day off would be Thursday 11. I'll be home all day doing wc ;D

Please send me a pm for contact number or else.

I actually like Luger idea of voting via the forum. I know many forum can handle a vote so maybe this one too. It would be really easy and i am sure A LOT more people would care to vote. Could be something like :

"Which entry do you think fit the most to this month theme and should win the comp ?"
Nb1:
Nb2:
...

just select your answer and that's done !

Well anyway congrats again to the winners and to everyone who took the time to submit and vote !!!

Thanks, Inza.

Fair play to those that entered and those that voted. Some nice fish and photo's.

I've been in touch with Inza and Miami regarding the prizes or should I say I don't need any more wood or fish. But the donation to the competition was greatly appreciated.

I also think the idea suggested by Lugar could work. Just set up more like a poll that you don't see the results of until the "poll" is complete.
Maybe someone else could try this and give Mr. H a break from the competitions. That's if he wants a break.

In all fairness he doesn't need a break - just a bit more co-operation.

Let's wait and see how the proposed new regime works (if it does) first.

The poll, however, for reasons already explained will not work with the rather limited poll set-up we have available to us here.

As explained I am able to create such a bespoke functionality and embed it into the system free of charge. It would take me weeks to get it done but it's for a good cause so I have no problem with that. If you don't like the idea John and if you think the emails are working fine, that's grand with me and I will always submit and vote the way I did this time. Just trying to help by providing another option on my own expence that's all.

Luger - Your offer to help is acknowledged and much appreciated but is not viable at this time.

ZX, likewise, that just becomes a lottery with your suggestion (although I would at least stand a small chance of winning using this method).

Thanks all the same for the suggestions.
