Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

August Vote result.

I may be able to collect them from Inza on your behalf and keep them warm for you in a tank of their own so that you don't have to forfeit the prize.

Wow thank you mani. I really hope I can return the favour some day. I have a. 2kg co2 canister I was going to put towards the next comp but seems that's been put on hold. It's yours if you want it. (least I can do)

no worries, i wont need the CO2. Now if you have cuttings or spare PVC piping or bends (and bulkheads) etc I am trying to do some DIY projects so i like to have that stuff handy. But its only if you have it and don't plan to use it. Make sure you have some time for a long chat and coffee when you come collect from me though :) You will get to see a few tanks and we can talk Discus for a while...
Actually we may invite some Discus keepers on the same day to have a mini Dublin get together.

Of course, I have some pipe and one bulkhead, I'll bring what I have and you can take what you like. But it's all imperial measurements.

The meet up sounds like a cool idea, I'll drop the misses off somewhere before hand

I should be free this Sunday at about 4:00 / 4:30.

It would be a shame if the comp was put on hold. Maybe instead of every month there was say 4 comps in a year. I've a 50€ seahorse voucher for tropical fish I'd be happy to offer as a price. Maybe a Halloween comp for the weirdest looking fish pic.

I actually included a picture with the previous post but it failed on upload for some reason. I'll try smaller size.

Paul,
I don't personally see why we can't have a round along the lines of your suggestion.

However, it has proved difficult in the past - whenever there has been a specific subject set people seem even more reluctant to contribute an entry - hence why we've tried to keep the majority of them 'subject free'. Also, when on previous occasions we have the closing date set at more than a month, next to no entries have been submitted (despite reminders) until almost the 'eleventh hour'.

But, if you're happy to donate your voucher as a prize - as with Inza last month - it's really only fair that you set the topic.
It might be a good idea too - if you were willing - for you (as the prize donor) to adjudicate on that round. How would you feel about this? I would still deal with receiving and publishing the entries but other than that it's your round (mine's a pint of stout)

I'd be happy to adjudicate a round. It doesn't have to be any topic just fishy subjects.. I only have 1 price so maybe others have small prizes they can offer.

"and also so submitted photos make it into the competition only if their authors vote."

Thats putting the cart before the horse.
The photos have to be in before the vote : )

An embedded/ plugin vote is the best route. We can always teak it or twerk it if you prefer : )

Suddenly everybody is a developer :hammer:

No Justin. I can make the system accept the images, but only allow them to proceed to the final assessment if their author voted.

But as John already decided - this is a "non-starter" and canceling the competitions is for some reason much better choice for the community.

Luger won the wood and six of Miami's Angels - I'm a bit uncertain myself as to the fate of the other six.
I was hoping everyone would stand aside on those other ones, eventually I might have won them - by default.

Hi John, sory for the late reply. If the next comp does go ahead I'm thinking a south american theme. Any fish from south america, that opens up my favourite monster fish category. The prize can be posted anywhere in the country and seahorse is open in Galway now making it easier to use the voucher. Hopefully this attracts a good interest.

Of course there is no problem with the photo submission and voting system thats why there are very few partisipants on both ends!! Now if it was improved it might enchourage partisipants instead of loosing them which seems to be happening as of late... to say an idea which was possibly tried a good number of years ago is a non runner and wont work now either is just lazy.... if your willing to let the comps stop because of the lack of interest in your vintage methods yet wont try keep them alive (or let someone with the interest try) then that says alot in my eyes!!

Inza, thanks for your precious gifts !!
Got enough wood for aquarium of my own and my friend's 90L.
I also got a big ball of christmas moss and nice bunch of fire moss as an unexpected bonus yeyy
Both very valuable acquisitions B)

You tank is great and well planted, my style...
I wish I could have tank as big as that at least, but in a rented accommodation it could turn up to be a disaster in case of moving a house... But one day !!

Funny enough one of the "prize" discus held in my tanks just paired with one of my own
Found them laying eggs yesterday.
Darkslice the good news is you have a small female. The bad news is if you dont want to break a pair then you're going to have to buy fish
