Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Christmas...into the New Year Round.

OK folks, A bit late (so nothing new there then) but we'll start the next Round to encompass Christmas and into the New Year.

Normally we try to end a round at midnight of the month concerned but this time around let's leave it active until midnight of January 3, just in case the New Year celebrations get a bit 'too much' for one or two of you (not me, though)  .

We have some worthwhile prizes for this round - generously donated by TROPICALIRELAND. I will add fuller details later on.

And...you won't be asked to vote in this round as the Prize Donor has kindly agreed to adjudicate the entries for us.

As with November's round there is no category set - so anything fish-or-fish-related is acceptable. All the usual Competition Rules apply, so start snapping away. Looking forward to seeing your entries at the usual email address:
This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
As usual, up to three photos per entrant but, please, they must be originals - your own work, but not necessarily your own fish - none of which can be accepted if they have appeared either here, or anywhere else before.

Oh yes - please add your Forum user name with your entries - it really does help.

Good luck everyone.

Here is the list of donations offered by TROPICALIRELAND, I think it will be best for him/them to allocate them for prizes as different winners might like different prizes (rather like it was for the November Round).

3 x Tropical T-shirts
Free samples of Fish food
Tropical Pens
Tropical leaflets

Plus, other than the Tropical T-Shirts, I don't know in what quantities the prizes will be donated.

I have received a further PM from TROPICALIRELAND which tells me there can be more donations but that there is a little degree of disappointment that - so far - only three entries have been received.

So, more pics requested.

OK then, the entries have been passed to TROPICALIRELAND for his/their perusal and adjudication - results will be posted as soon as the decision has been made.

I thought 13 and 14 were the best. Sorry for my ignorance but what are they? Would they go into my fresh water mixed community tank?
Lovely fish and photo.

I'm far from a cichlid expert but I think 13 and 14 are kribs cichlids. Amazingly colourful fish that are very easy to keep in a mixed tank.

Lovely fish and photo.

They are Pelvicachromis taeniatus (Nigerian Reds, I'm pretty sure), quite closely related the the common-or-garden Krib, the latin name of which is Ppelvicachromis pulcher - the name before those intent upon renaming and reclassifying everything was Pelmatachromis kribensis - which became shortened to kribs.
They are fairly well-mannered in a larger community environment, I have found - just like the Kribs - but when they breed then all bets are off, they are most vigilant as parents, but sometimes the female takes over all parental duties with the male just looking on.
Of course, it's always dangerous to make such sweeping statements, especially with Cichlids (even Dwarf Cichlids) but the usual recommendation is to try - but keep an eye on how things progress if you should want to give them a try.

A courier arrived this morning with a package. I wasn't expecting anything for a couple of days yet.Wonder who's this from? Opened it up and found fish food, loads of fish food ,a T-shirt, some literature which I shall peruse and some more fish food.
Thank you Sebastian at TROPICAL IRELAND for sponsoring the competition and for donating these fishy treets,my fish will think it's Christmas again ( I already gave them some of the Spirulina granules and they greedily demolished them ).
