Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

As promised - a competition round for July

OK then folks (or at least those of you who enjoy this aspect of the Forum).
July 2017 Round starts today.

So far our prize donations (in no particular order) are Ger's pack of Catappa Leaves, Craig's 5 Cories - and a second donation of Catappa Leaves, Jonlate's Floating Plants, and conditional upon us getting a minimum of 24 images, Bill's Prize. I'll add another Azoo 100w heater (again, brand new, but in a less-than pristine box) - same as the one in May's round.

Of course, any further donations would be gratefully accepted.

As mentioned, there is no set topic again this month but the other usual 'Terms and Conditions' applying as usual. It is worth stressing that no image enhancement - beyond the ones mentioned in the Rules - are acceptable.

So, up to three entries - Fish-or-Fish-Related, please remember to add your Forum user-name, and send it/them to:
This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
I'll be back anon with details of any further donated prizes (should there be any, of course).
Please check the Competition T&Cs in the post at the start of the Competitions' category and it only remains for me to thank in advance the entrants and prize donors.

Oh yes - there is no need to resize your entries as the kind folks at Photobucket do that for us.
One last thing - this Round stays open until Midnight July 31.
As ever - the thread will remain open until the first entries are received and thereafter will be locked until the Round closes.

Good luck all, or those of you who enter.

John

I'm truly sorry about this, folks, but photobucket seems to have changed its stipulations and have decreed that pics for our Forum are no longer free to be used (as has been the case since forever!!!).
They are now requiring us to pay $399 A YEAR!!! for what they term 3rd party hosting (ie for us to use their hosting facility on our Forum).

Quite obviously this cost is totally out of the question for us so I shall need to find a suitable alternative.

Please, though, don't let this deter any would-be entrants from submitting more pictures - I'm sure a suitable alternative can be found.

Sorry again for this, but it really is totally beyond our control.

Still searching for an alternative - thanks to the members who suggested alternatives - the problem seems to be in finding a hosting site which allows the images to be locked (ie, only visible to members who have the link - posted here on the Forum - which appears as the actual image).
Here's an article explaining the situation better than I can:

Although not ideal, I have stopped using Photobucket (until they desist from demanding $400 a year to host images) and am using the Forum server's 'Attachments' facility for this round.
I have been trying other host sites without too much joy so far but will keep trying - so this can be considered a 'for now' (which may get extended) method.

Sadly this means that ALL previous Forum images hosted via photobucket will not appear. This is a bit of a tragedy since attempting to reload ALL previous images from the past would prove far too mammoth a task to even consider.
Let's hope they rescind this demand and return to their earlier free hosting.
