Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Will one of them be worth showing or will they still be too young. I know they will be too young for a breeding team but how about as an individual male or something? :)

To be honest the guppy wont have coloured up in 7 weeks, it takes longer for them to start developing colours.

I think fish need to be 3 months old, not 100% sure, I must check the rules, however why don't you bring along the happy couple as a breeding pair :-)

Hi just wondering how the judges would ascertain the correct adult size of fish on which information is scarce or contradictory. Have they a particular academic text they reference ? For instance if I was to bench an unusual crenicichla species that they haven't seen before.

@ dubdero. Unfortunately it's a fresh water fish show. Only fresh water fish will be judged.
If you are interested in doing a brackish water display tank send me a PM.
Transporting fish to the show would be the same as getting fish in your LFS. An appropriate sized fish bag or for large fish a food grade bucket would be better.
If you dont have your own tank then we will provide the tank.

@ Trimax. The ITFS are affiliated with the FBAS (federation of british aquatic society's). Each year they do a size book for fish judges. They use fishbase and check records of fish that have been shown. If they are bigger than suggested by fishbase then the larger size is put in the size book.
An example of this is a fire eel that gets shown in the UK. It gets bigger every year. Last October it measured 42" so in the size book this year it will be sized at 42". I'm not sure what size it is on fishbase, probably about 40".
As for your unusual pike cichlid, i'm not 100% sure. Best one of the qualified judges answer that for you.

Darren.

hi trimax
anybody applying to become a fish show judge and passing a fairly stringent exam, must be an experienced fishkeeper
with a broad range knowledge of keeping and breeding the various species. most judges would be familiar with people in the wholesale,
retail and breeding ends of the hobby and would make it their business to know of newly introduced species.
i hope this eases your concern.

I have been to the venue to check a few things. I took a sample of the water to test.
PH-7.2 GH-60ppm (3.4dh) all other water stats are fine.
As mentioned earlier it is best to bring as much of your own water as you can. This is the water the fish are used to so it will be less stressful fr them.

There is no dead line as such.
The idea of having entry forms is so we know what the fish are, what size they are so we can have the appropriate size tank ready and how many fish will be entered.
There is also a bit of paperwork that has to be done for each fish. It's not so bad when you have a few late entries but when it's a few hundred that a lot of paperwork that has to be done. Which was the case last time and the pens were been pushed right through the night, right up untill the judging started the next day.
Also anyone entering Discus that hasn't sent in an entry form needs to notify me so we can have a base-heated tank ready.

Yes that's no problem, it would be great if you also have the proper name of the fish, to speed up ID, but if you don't don't worry.

It's ok admin, i have his entry form.

Trimax just get your friend to mention you have sent in the entry form.
Trimax maybe after your gig you could drop along to the venue to do a private gig for the people staying over all night keeping an eye on the fish. The PA system is already there, just plug and play:laugh:

Most likely he/she will be in a 90L tank.
The water in the venue is ph7.2

We will be taking entries in roughly between 6-9pm Saturday evening.
There will be entry forms available for those that didn't get time to send them in.
So just bag and bring your fish tomorrow evening. Preferably with plenty of your own water.

Darren.
