Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Wassup!

Hey Folks

Thought i say hi. Been member of forum for while but never had time to post but hope to make up for that.

So quick run down of what i have aquarium wise.

Its a Jewel Record 80 with the compact super filter system. Had the tank one the go in its current format for almost 3 years now. First populated the tank in 2008 pre Xmas however i never cycled the tank properly plus i got a white fungal infection from the fish i did introduce and unfortunately i lost my first batch of fish.

So lesson learned i restarted in 2009 and started new cycle and waited 8 weeks before i put anything in. Started off with 10 neon tetras and 2 Chinese algae eaters. Glad to say after 2.5yr i still have the 2 algae eaters and 2 tetra left. Rest passed of age mainly.

I have the fortune to work with one of the guys on this forum, Andrew, and he has thought me a wealth of knowledge as well as being very generous with his fish. I took 6 male endlers from him and still have 2 swimming happily about. The best addition however has been Gardeneri Killifish. from 2 males and 2 females i have thankfully bred 12 new additions and hope to breed more and start passing them onto anyone who wants them. These fellas are lovely color and i really like their disposition. One of the males has a kinked tail and this trait is coming through in his kids.

In terms of aqua-scaping i have tried various plants on and off with limited success. 2 main reasons are introduction of snails which seem to over run the plants and also an introduction of nymph flies (from a shop thats no longer in business). I thought i had cleared them out through numerous water changes etc however one survived and actually made it to adult status before i caught him.

So at moment i only have 2 pieces of drift wood which are covered in algae. Partly because some of the sun does hit the tank in the evening but unfortunately because of size i cant move it anywhere else. I plan on putting in some Marimo moss balls and hope they will reduce nutrients for the algae. Also i plan on putting in some assassin snails to deal with the other snails.

Finally, i have decided to try a second tank, a 54l with the Stingray filter system. I only filled the tank a week ago so will be a few weeks before i populate. And i will be watching my aquatesting readings like a hawk lol.
I hope to plant this tank up properly.Have JBL Manado as substrate and hope to plant some Lilaeopsis brasiliensis in fore ground (thanks to Des for a post about this plant) and have a rock structure towards rear. Any suggestions of other suitable additions would be most welcome.

Any feedback welcome and hope i can bring something to the forum too. I have put some pics of the killi's and the Chinese algae eaters in the photo section and pics of the 2 tanks and the nymph fly below.

Catch you later
Eugene

ha ha true although their name is a bit of a mis-momer. They only eat algae when young and even less when they get older. Good artical about them at link below
