Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Long story but early last week my desktop computer refused to boot up, I don't know much about the technical side of these things so I switched to my ageing (like its owner) laptop and that was working fine so all was well - until Thursday morning when it just switched itself off and nothing would make it start again.
So, eventually, here am I with another laptop.
I had a quick look through previous posts an am delighted to note everyone was well-behaved in my enforced absence...not than anything less would have happened, we have a good crew here now.

Captain Valerie was in the wings...she's far better at keeping tyrants and dissidents like yourself 'in line'...

Welcome back John after your bad bit of luck.

I'm no expert on computers either but as regards the laptop which broke down, are you getting the green light on the ac adapter? If not, then plug in and out the cable(slowly) coming from the plug into the ac adapter. If you hear a crackling sound you should be able to get it going again after a bit of jiggling. If you do then don'tmove the adapter or you'll end up having to repeat the process again. This is just my own experience from a Dell laptop that have a bad reputation with their adapters.

Which reminds me of the old tale where two men were sitting at a bar and one says to the other "My mother-in-law's an angel".
To which the other replies "You're lucky - mine's still alive".
(Bet you've never heard that one before?

*Dave:
Sadly the power supply seems to be working fine - well, I checked it with a meter and it's showing full voltage coming out.
I also checked the battery and that seems to be fully charge as well. I'm confused (what, me?).
Problem is I have a whole lot of irreplaceable Music and Music videos in it which I would hate to lose, plus all the ITFS competition entries etc etc.
Likewise with the desktop - hopefully I'll be able to retrieve them all in time, anyone have any suggestions?
John

i dont think you need worry about that awl roger waters and black sabbath caterwailing lol, but the fish stuff now that has to be saved.
the hard drive should be removable and linked to the new computer and transferred easily enough, i think!

As Derek said, easy peasy, I have a caddy that I can hook up to your Drive, I can transfer everything to your new Laptop, i believe there is a fixit for errant batteries, google your problem, i believe this is rectifiable, try using it with no battery and only the Power cord attached.

I hope all works out for you very soon, as said the transfer of data is easy enough and maybe an external Hard Drive as a backup for all your stuff should be considered....................Tom.
