Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi hows it goin i was on here before but i totally forgot my user name and password

anyway i have a 7ft x 2ft x 2ft 800L tank with fluval fx5 filter on it
at the moment the tank contains
2 Large tiger oscars
6 1 year old irish jack dempseys
3 twin spot qouramis
2 large plecos
1 blue lobster
1 cori dora
1 xxl silver dollar
1 green sevrum pretty big

i know the selection of fish is a bit of a disaster and i wont even go into some of the fish ive had in the tank that dissapeared on me i would onluy be slated lol

i bought this tank just over a year ago and have easily lost about 500 quids worth a fish in it ,i lost interest for a while and im lookin to get it back up to standard so im lookin for some advice on what to do with it im on a limited budget as im on the dole at the minute

there is 2 6ft lenghts of bogwood in it at the min with black stones im willing to change ecerything to make it work and become a nice tank .the lighting situation isnt great either i hadn the money for proper lights so at the mo i have 2 x 5ft florescent fittings sitting on the top of the tank i know its not ideal ,im a sparks myself and was wondering was there any diy lighting rigs i could hook up on the cheap

Thanks in advance
Deco

thats a fine sized tank you have there, and a bit of a mix of fish, the only suggestion i'd have immediately is to have a bit more cover/shelter for fish, i'm not suprised you lost some bet ya they where smaller fish, oscars and dempseys would see them as snacks but if you had more cover they might have been able to survive by being able to hide out..
let us know what your thinking about adding / changing and i'm sure you'll get plenty of suggestions and alternate ideas, enjoy the forum and welcome

You're very welcome back Deco, did you stop keeping fish, or just give the Forum a miss?

welcome to the forum,

your tank has got great potential,

here is what i would do,

make up some sort of cover over your lights, you seem to be losing alot of light up the wall.. :)

put a solid black background on the tank,(paint prob be the cheapest)

replace the stones with sand, you can get from garden centre for cheap enough.

you dont need to add much in the way of decoration, a few rocks maybe, not to many, keep it fairly basic
this will show off your fish better, and can look really cool,

am on the dole myself so unfortunetly am speaking from experiance

as for fish "dont add anymore"

ps dont listen to these guys telling you to get into african cichlids!!

not gonna say anything about the fist part of your post :pinch:
trust me on the black background and sand, i have it done in my SA cichlid tank and it is the business..
if you were to just keep the jacks, plecos and severum, and get rid of the rest, maybe would be best,
all the best with whatever you decide.

welcome to the forum your tank has great potential so it does ;-)
looking forward to seeing some pics when ya do a bit more.i would only paint the back of the tank not the sides. Just remember jack dempseys can be worse than osacrs ;-) believe me i had a big one and he was king in my 720 litre. It would be a risk adding an arwona to the tank now as cichlids are territoial but might be a good chance if ya gonna change the tank up.I had no luck both my arwonas got killed by my jack depmsey. good luck in what ever ya do ;-)

ok just a thought but green terrors, red terrors, motas, salvinis, convicts and jags are can easily be kept with jacks avoid fish that are too similar to jacks though and make sure when adding these fish or any fish to rearrainge the decor so all have to make new territories as a jack will vigourously defend its patch, also to lower agression make sure you have shelters for all fish to have a hide away should they need it...
just my thoughts hope they help

realistically with what you have not many infact i'd say for fully grown size of these fish your at or above capacity now, so besides the oscars i'd consider losing 1 or 2 more and only replace the fish you've got shot of and you'd want to keep on top of the water changes to stop spikes in nitrites / nitrates and ammonia, as these big fish make one hell of a mess i'd be personally recommending at least 20% a week if you want to keep that quantity, you could split it into 2 x 10% if it made things easier for you

Welcome back. Just keep an eye on the blue crayfish as he gets bigger he will go for fish. A mate of mine lost a lot of fish to his two and he gave them the heave ho when he came home and saw one of the crayfish eating his biggest angel in the tank which a was a massive beaut.

Follow me up to Carlow
