Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

When you say cycling the system, do you mean that i need to have the filter and heater running for a few days so the tank will build up the correct level of bacteria before i can introduce any fish into the tank??

Wishing you the very best of luck in getting your tank up and running (it sounds complicated but, be reassured, it's easy) If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask.
The one rule in fish keeping which I find is the most important is : patience. Don't rush it and soon enough, you'll be looking for another/bigger tank !

It is worth being patient with the cycling, There are a lot of very expierienced guys and gals on here to give some great advice so dont be afraid to ask

The Betta is probably not the best fish to start off with,as beautiful as they are,sometimes they are more trouble than there worth(and they are not cheap)...just my experience is no matter how compatible you read a betta and 'another' fish is,with there flowing and very colourful fins,the temptation for a nibble is always there so think hard before you purchase!!
As for sharks,your tank is way too small to consider them so maybe look at 1/2 gourami's and maybe 3 green cory's with 6/8 guppies!!
Just make sure whatever fish you decide on,to introduce gradually

Two male fighters in the same tank will fight to the death, they are extremely territorial. Any fish with large or flowing fins can be perceived by a male fighter as another fighter and he will act accordingly. A female fighter would be ok with guppies but I would'nt keep a male, they're better kept on their own.

Could I get one of those breeding nets that stay at the top of the tank and keep him in there?? Ill check all this before i buy my fish tomorrow. Im really excited about getting them tomorrow
